Low-dose naltrexone - LDN anyone?

Thanks for the suggestion Alto. I'm not sure that it's that though. I do not get the same reaction from eating a banana. I'm thinking it could be the caffeine. I do not consume it regularly and the chocolate could have given me that little energy boost. I have decided to not try the LDN, at least for now. I have been set back from a large amount of stress due to a big stressful move. I'm dealing with WD symptoms I haven't seen in a while so I'm not really up to anymore "experimenting."

Intermittent Klonopin use February, 2014 to September, 2015

- Off of SSRIs completely since April, 2012

- Had horrible side effects from Celexa (constant feelings of terror, insomnia) so stopped taking it after 6 weeks

- Started 20 mg of Celexa in February 2012

- Began to taper off of Zoloft in May, 2011, off Zoloft completely September, 2011

- Increased Zoloft to 75 mg October, 2010 and decreased back to 50 mg in February, 2011

- June 2009- Went on 50 mg of Zoloft

- October, 2007 - July, 2008- Celexa 20 mgs (tapered off fairly quickly)

- 2006-2007- On Effoxor for about 8 months- switched to Prozac and cold turkeyed off

- 2005- Paxil and Lamictal for a few months but stopped taking because it didn't work

- 2004- Paxil for a few months but quit taking because of increased feelings of depression

At any rate, chocolate is yummy. If it makes you feel good, all the better.

I've been looking into LDN therapy and am going to give it a trial.

Lexy , I think it's a great shame that you were advised to take 0.5mg twice a day rather than once. ("Last night I took .5 twice a day. It made me feel like I had had two/three shots of alcohol, dizziness, slurred speech, feeling stuck to the couch.")

My intention is to stick with 0.5mg once a day for a few weeks to see how I tolerate it.

The facebook groups have lots of info. , as do sites like www.lowdosenaltrexone.org

1987-1997 pertofran , prothiaden , Prozac 1997-2002 Zoloft 2002-2004 effexor 2004-2010 Lexapro 40mg

2010-2012Cymbalta 120mg

Sept. 2012 -decreased 90mg in 6months. Care taken over by Dr Lucire in March 2013 , decreased last 30mg at 2mg per week over 3 months. July 21 , 2013- last dose of Cymbalta

Protracted withdrawal syndrome kicked in badly Jan.2014 Unrelenting akathisia until May 2014. Voluntary hosp. admission. Cocktail of Seroquel, Ativan and mirtazapine and I was well enough to go home after 14 days. Stopped all hosp. meds in next few months.

July 2014 felt v.depressed - couldn't stop crying. Started pristiq 50mg. Felt improvement within days and continued to improve, so stayed on 50mg for 8 months.

Began taper 28 Feb. 2015. Pristiq 50mg down to 45mg. Had one month of w/d symptoms. Started CES therapy in March. No w/d symptoms down to 30mg.

October 2015 , taking 25mg Pristiq. Capsules compounded with slow-release additive.

March 2016 , 21mg

Hi Lexy , so glad you saw this. Was there a reason for doubling the dose? Given our sensitivities ,

I'm wondering if I shouldn't start at even lower , 0.25 , and see how that goes.

I have Hashimotos and take thyroid meds. every day , so I need to titrate that down.

Am having a full blood panel done , so that in 6 months time I'll have objective data to assess if there's been an improvement in function ,as well as my subjective impression.

I do realize that 50% of folks say it hasn't helped them , and I may need to push through some uncomfortable symptoms initially.

As a matter of fact, my doctor who diagnosed withdrawal syndrome from effexor admitted that he should have started me on even a lower dose. He mentioned .05mg however by the. I just wanted off. It took weeks of feeling the drunken, swaying feeling.

Remember to always start low and steady. I stayed on it for 2 weeks, not sure if it would have worked if I would have given it another two weeks.

Hi Fresh. I am also ready to try LDN but am a little nervous because I'm hyper sensitive. Please keep us updated. I'm in a few of the Facebook groups and I've heard of really sensitive people dosing every 2 to 3 days. From what I've read in one of the groups, it can take some people longer to clear it. If I decide to go with it, I'll definitely start at .25 once a day.

Thanks Celeste.    I believe it's a safer practice to take a dose each day , albeit tiny.  Cross your fingers for me   :D .

Well , I've been taking LDN for 5 weeks now with a noticeable improvement in mood and sleep.

I started at 0.5mg for a week , then 1mg for a week , then 1.5mg (holding there).

About 10 days ago my dreams became more vivid and my sleep more restless , so I moved the

dose to mornings as recommended.

Big difference , am no longer having restless sleep. Have still had a couple of nights where

I wake at 3 and don't go back to sleep for a few hours , but the quality is improving.

I actually don't feel exhausted when I wake up lately.

I've also still had wipeout days after doing too much for a few days. Like , I went out last

Thursday and Friday and again Friday night , then slept most of Saturday. Out on Sunday ,

slept most of Monday. No quick fixes , but I feel I'm on an upwards trajectory.

i did ldn 10 years or so ago.  i remember loving it but i can't totally remember why.  one thing for sure was that my sleep felt wonderful.  i would feel deliciously sleepy and luxuriate into sleep.  i know i took it several years.  i had hashimoto's and cfs.  a lot was going on in my life back then.  i think i just stopped because i was bored with it.  it's subtle, it doesn't hit you over the head.  sleeping really well, feeling relaxed perhaps isn't big enough news to keep me making up little bottles and withdrawing with a syringe.   now i am doing that again because i feel awful.

honestly i wish i had kept it up and perhaps being prescribed gabapentin the devil drug for neuropathy and some minor stuff would not have happened.

i am starting it again tonight.  found some old pills.

really works for ms apparently.

many years ago given sinequan for depression bad reaction so tiny dose of meleril to balance... quit after a year or so c/t

years pass no drugs

reg doc had me try all of the  a/d bc of upset due to divorce.  couldn't handle any.  took klonopin to sleep .5 mg  2003

taper klonopin

hooked on tramadol accidentally. 2006-2008 husband had migraines and took them like candy. so i became dependent too.  c/t  2008

diagnosis of porphyria after years of symptoms,  then toxic event made me really ill.

gabapentin 300mg every 3 hours , 6x day.

propranolol   180 mg  6x / day

since 2012

clonazepam prescribed as 1 mg / day  but beginning to take more to deal with withdrawals and sleeplessness

LDN is typically to boost endorphin levels.

Past AD Experiences : (Fluvoxamine 3 years, D/C'd @ age 15).

Light thinks it travels faster than anything but it is wrong. No matter how fast light travels, it finds the darkness has always got there first, and is waiting for it

~Terry Pratchett~

WITHDRAWAL REGIMEN/STORY

Originally for OCD, the luvox took about 6 months to taper off.

Withdrawal supplements; lemon balm, Vitamin B3, black water/fulvic acid, high-protein diet to restore neurotransmitters, aniracetam to counter memory issues, deprenyl for persisting anhedonia.

Regimen still maintained til this day. Lemon balm, generally as capsules, however, as I suffer chronic Insomnia, I often use essential oil or as aromatherapy before bed , in combination with magnesium and lysine on bad nights.

My doc just prescribed it for me - for its anti-inflammatory properties.

Lordy, I went around to some of the Low Dose Naltrexone sites, and it sounds like the best thing since sliced bread!

I'm nervous about it though.  Anything that fiddles neurotransmitters - even the endorphin ones - makes me a bit nervous.  I'm  also concerned that it won't address my pain - and I cannot take codeine while on it.  Some people say the codeine will make me sick.  Others say it will just not work.

Did my first dose tonight - too early to tell.  I'm on 1 mg at night.

I'm supposed to double it after 3 weeks if I'm still struggling with my pain issues.

My brain is in state of terrible withdrawal that are exchanging with symptoms from Serotonin syndrome. I was suggested Ldn an took it in desperation of my horror state. I was on it 2 months 3 mg. At the begging I noticed nothing. Over time my eyes symptoms ( from serotonin syndrome) became more often and I have started experiencing new eyes symptoms. At the same time I have started feeling better at so much things so I couldn't figure it out, am I getting better or worse, until 2nd month of using when I developed all symptoms from Serotonin syndrome again, I had to stop LDN abruptly and started vomiting and being cold like in acute withdrawal. I could not find official link that explains LDN effects on serotonin system. I found on some forum that people who took LDN together with AD have developed Serotonin syndrome. Obviously there is connection. In my experience anyone with history of Serotonin syndrome don't take it!

Cymbalta

  • 03/2014 - 03/2015 - Deanxit, Cypralex 10mg and Clonazepam 1mg (all prescribed for foot pain), stopped Deanxit and Cypralex cold-turkey, got mild withdrawal symptoms
  • 06/2015 - 09/2015 -  due to neck pain (caused by cold-turkey above) I got on Cymbalta 30mg for one week, after one week up to 60mg
  • 09/2015 - in one week lowered my dose of Cymbalta from 60mg to zero. I got severe withdrawal symptoms and got back to 60mg
  • 09/2015 - two weeks later I was feeling stable and started to lower my dose again to 30mg. 3 weeks later severe withdrawal symptoms started again
  • 10/2015 - I got back to 60mg of Cymbalta and I still have severe withdrawal symptoms.
  • 03/2016 - Started tapering 1% per week, for 4 weeks
  • 04/2016 - After 4 weeks, and 4% off stopped tapering due to unbearable symptoms
  • 06/2016 - Started switching Cymbalta to Fluoxetine
  • 07/2016 - Switched half-way, stopped at 30 mg Cymbalta and 20 mg of Fluoxetine. Couldn't continue with bridging due to severe eyes problems, caused by Fluoxetine.
  • 08/2016 - Stopped taking all drugs due to Serotonin syndrome

Clonazepam

  • 03/2014 - 04/2016 - 1 mg of Clonazepam daily
  • 07/2016 - today - 0.5 mg of Clonazepam daily
  • 08/2016 - stopped Clonazepam completely due to Serotonin syndrome

When I think now, its logical, everything that boosts endorphins could boosts other things like serotonin

So generally that could be good therapy for withdrawal symptoms and for help in tapering process from AD maybe and benzo. But there is risk for Serotonin syndrome. My eyes receptors are upregulated and oversensitized due to being in unrecognized Serotonin syndrome for over a month. So maybe I am not good to compare with but anyway be cautious

It's now been 6 months.  My dose has gradually crept up to 4 mg.  I'd keep it at 3.5 mg, but I have so many 2 mg capsules it's just easier to take 2x2mg than it would be to take a 2 mg, a 1 mg, and a 0.5 mg (and I need a new script to get those lower amounts).

Overall - my IBS has improved immensely - I would say I'm almost normal there.

My tinnitus has gone through the roof .

My pain is better - an injury is taking 3 months to recover instead of 6 or more months.

I am able to be more active, and recover more quickly.

Apparently if you take any gluten at all while on this, it will bite you.  I don't know why that is, but I got diagnosed "celiac susceptible" so I'm being extra cautious.  It does seem that if I get any wheat - I get sicker quicker than before.

I'm inclined to continue.  I don't think it's a miracle - but for "chronic fatigue" and "fibromyalgia"-like symptoms, it has helped reduce some of the challenges.

I’m writing this in regards to speaking to jancarol in a earlier message and I am not saying that this a cure in any means and that people who wish to try it please use the wealth of knowledge on here when approaching any form of supplement or medication . I have a female friend who I havnt seen for a while who was on seroquel at a high dose I believe she was on it for about 4 years she felt well and not knowing anything about withdrawel and just stopped as you can imagine I thought wow how can that be possible she told me she was fine never felt better, for the first 4 months then things started to go down hill for her over the next month we know this to be withdrawel so she was talking to a friend who recommended ldn and so my friend started it and says she feels great and has had no problems with withdrawals since she has now been of seroquel for 10 months c/t , maybe my friend was just very lucky and I believe she was but maybe ldn May have help alleviate some of the pain and discomfort from a taper I don’t know . My friend was probably lucky enough not to be in protracted withdrawel as we know this is when real problems start . Again I am not telling people that we should all rush out and get ldn and it’s a cure I think if it was alto would have let us know years ago , if you wish to try it start a very small amount but as I have found even the tiniest amounts of supplements can be progmatic . I have thought about trying it my self but I can’t even take fish oil I’m that sensitive maybe in time

LDN is meant to be a potential treatment for DP/DR according to small trial that had some limited success:https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4204471/

Does anyone have any experience in this regard?

In Jan 2011 started Lexapro 10 mg after 10 minutes consultation with doctor telling him I felt anxious in confined spaces and had an anxiety attack on plane and underground. Remained on that dosage until Sept 2014. Tapered following a doctor's schedule on 2.5 mg drops every three weeks. Once stopped I developed severe withdrawals. Three weeks of Prozac beginning of Oct 2014 but had adverse reaction and stopped CT. Protracted withdrawals since. Supp now - magnesium, fish oil, turmeric, vit D, melatonin (but recently it's made me depressed), castus vitex capsule with ginger, Withania, Vit E, zinc, Lutein for PMS.

  • ChessieCat changed the title to Low-dose naltrexone - LDN anyone?
  • 4 weeks later...

My prescriber recently suggested I try Naltrexone, but wanted me to research it first.  I read this thread and some information on another support site and just wondering if there are any people recently who have tried it and what their experience is. I'm hesitant to add another drug to my system. From what I have read so far it's a chance if it works.

Effexor 2008 - 2017 37.5 Mg . Upped to 150 mg on 2017.  November of 2017 to March 2018 went from 150 mg to 0.

Valium June 2018 started 10 mg currently 2.5 mg daily, September 2021 0.0 mg

Trazadone started March 2018 100 mg at night to sleep Oct 16, 2018 went to 75 mg , November 13, 2018 67.5 mg, Dec 11 60.75 mg, January 21, 2019  54 mg, 02/09 50 mg, March 2022 0.0 mg

Because SA is a site for tapering/reducing psychiatric drugs I think it is highly unlikely that you will find members here who have tried LDN for these particular traits.  I suggest that you search for online support groups, forums, facebook groups for those particular traits.

Yes I had anxiety and a lot of nausea on ldn.  Took a couple of weeks to settle.

I’ve struggled with so many symptoms over the years from A-Z.
I feel for everyone that is going through this nightmare.

Considering microdosing to help with withdrawals from Fluoxetine. just past a year since my last dose of fluoxetine but I still experience intense ringing in the ears and headaches and low energy especially when I do not get adequate sleep.

Fluoxetine zero

Brain zaps

Back up to Fluoxetine 10mg

Zero Fluoxetine for 4 months - After 4 months extreme withdrawal symptoms surfaced

Sertraline 25 mg for 4 weeks - couldn't stabilize.

Fluoxetine 10mg then 5mg 2 weeks couldn't stabilize

@Moment19, from most of what I read about it, it makes tinnitus worse.  Mine is so bad I won't even consider LDN

It's a good idea to do your own research (on the internet) about possible side effects of anything you are considering taking.

@lucidity Good call. I was thinking about doing a very low dose like .025 to start to see if it helped. I have been doing a bunch of research on it. It doesn't seem like there is enough data out there to show whether it could be useful for long term gains to deal with potentially more ringing in my ears. @ChessieCat Thanks for your suggestion.

Hello all, I’ve been interested is LDN and wondered if there had been more experiences of it especially for those in tapering/withdrawal as well thyroid issues.

I would appreciate any one’s live experience of this to share.

2018 April: Reinstated Paroxetine 20mg and Carbamazepine Prolonged Release 400mg (200mg morning and night) after abrupt withdrawal of 6 months (lots of on off AD and other drugs use for years prior to this this).

2018 August: Began slow taper of Paroxetine. At 10mg severe headaches began, switched to 10mg Fluoxetine. Cont. on Carbamazepine Prolonged Release 400mg (200mg morning and night). Occasional but over recommended dose use of sleeping tablet.

2018 - 2023: ‘Stable’ on Fluoxetine 10mg and Carbamazepine Prolonged Release 400mg (200mg morning and night). Cont. but over recommended dose use of sleeping tablet, switched sleeping tablet to manage addiction and achieve sleep. Began very occasional use of benzodiazepines by 2020 (eg. 2 dose of 10mg in a 9 month period, varies according to need and some months can be more). Cont. headaches, developed anxiety and other body pains.
2023 (February) - Rapid 4 week taper in February from Carbamazepine Prolonged Release 400mg (200mg morning and night) to nil (mistakenly!).

2023 (March to present) - very infrequent use of sleeping tablets and benzodiazepines, diagnosed with hypothyroidism (April ish) and currently treated with Levothyroxine (final dose yet to be determined), began taper of Fluoxetine 10mg (June) currently on 8mg of fluoxetine.
Also, still invariably take CBD oil, multiple vitamins and minerals including Omega 3, iron etc. Adjusted as needed.

Note - Throughout the above years I have been an inpatient and outpatient with decisions made for me regarding drugs inc. abrupt withdrawals. Some were planned by me when unaware of withdrawal affects. Others while I was ‘unwell’ and began by unwittingly missing doses. Like many of us I have experienced many ‘symptoms’ on and off the drugs. Above, I have tried to share my main complaints and history as best as I can and remember.

My full drug history can be found in my opening post
