Hi Joy and JC and all

Thanks for thinking of me. I have been spending a lot of the time at the hospital lately!  I have to have my gallbladder removed and have been having all the pre op checks and seeing the surgeon twice.  Just have to see the anaesthetist now and then  will have to wait  to have the surgery and don't know how long that will be. I will speak to the anaesthetist about WD and my ramped up nervous system and hope he will use something that won't make things worse!

I have had to go on a low fat diet with very bland food as anything else makes the pain worse. Am losing weight which is not a bad thing really!

WD wise I am OK  but the stress of the op and the pain gets me down a bit.

Hope all OK with you guys?

Love from Flowers xxx

So all this pre-surgery is keeping you busy Flowers......I would be interested to know what the anaesthetist has to say about minimizing effects on CNS.

I empathize re: special diet, I'm struggling with this wretched detox.  I admire you for being upbeat about it Flowers, well done you!

Am pretty down at the moment (mood swings like no tomorrow).

Love and hugs,

JC xx

Yes - I know my way around the hospital a bit better now!  Alto posted about general anaesthetics and I will take her info with me. I don't know anything about it but don't want any adrenaline or the like!

Think you are great doing the detox especially if you are hungry and fancy something you can't have. I am not hungry and feel sick a lot of the time so it is easy to eat bland food.

I am trying to be upbeat - it has to be done so might as well just get on with it as I have no choice in the matter! Grrhhhh!

You are always so positive so I am  sorry you are down. Do you think it is WD based after coming off totally?

Hope you feel a bit more cheerful soon. Have you got anything nice planned to look forward to?

Lots of love and hugs

No I haven't moved yet - everyone is rowing about money and land.  My daughter and I have had to go to a solicitor to try to sort it out - my son is trying to take everything.  My solicitor says unless my husband realises my son is trying to dupe him all we can do is a financial separation.  My husband and I daughter and son on law and Esme were meant to email going to Minorca in August but my husband has pulled out of that.  I am still going though.

My husband is very old fashioned and doesn't think heather and I should have anything because we are female.  I still love my husband but I can't let my son get away with this.  I am OK basically but have pockets of depersonalisation and derealisation which is due to the stress.  I have to get this sorted though.  My daughter is really upset.  My recent attempt at withdrawal is going quite well though.

My daughter is hoping her father comes to his senses but my solicitor says Yorkshire dales farmers are very hard when it comes to these issues.

  • 5 months later...

Update Time!

Hello to all my old friends on here. Sorry I have not been on here much but   I have had a wonderful window which lasted 5 months!

The  past few months have gone by very quickly which is good when in WD.

I am still waiting to have my gall bladder out!

Once I started my low fat diet in May  I felt much better and not in so much pain. I felt really well WD wise too but decided to not do anything to reduce any of the meds until after my op so not to rock the boat.

May June and July whizzed by and I managed to work and enjoy spare time too. No withdrawal symptoms at all but had to be careful not to get too tired.

In July my  husband and I took a holiday back to UK to see friends and family. Normally getting on a plane would have freaked me out but I was fine and we had a great time. Unfortunately while we were away the hospital here rang me to ask to go in the next day. Of course I couldn't do that so it seems I have been put to the back of the waiting  list again.

August and September were very hot and debilitating as always but I got through and enjoyed the guests we had over.

A couple of weeks ago I got a sore throat and have been taking antibiotics and whether or not it is coincidence or not I seem to be back in a nasty wave. I think I had tiny indications of WD symptoms before the sore throat arrived. The first wave in ages which is hard to bear as you get lulled into a force sense of security that you are never going to get one again!

I am now waking with a jolt and heart banging with a weird internal trembling in my stomach. I am quite depressed and anxious too and feel totally stressed out. I have no energy and am not interested in much but do force myself out for a walk each day. The worst symptom is low back pain and PGAD which I have had before in WD and it has passed.

After all these years in WD I know I just have to sit it out until it goes trying to relax and rest in the meantime. But it is sooooo  hard!

I am getting worried about having to go into hospital  feeling like this. Maybe someone has had experience of going through surgery while WD symptoms are playing havoc?

When I saw the Anaesthetist I felt very well (apart from the gall stones)  but did mention about my CNS being very sensitive. She told me there was an anaesthetic they could use which would hopefully not stimulate my system.  Jungle Chicken if you are reading this she did give me the name and it is one Altostrata has mentioned too.

I have been called into see the Surgeon again on November 2nd. I think this is because it has been over 5 months now when I had all the pre op checks so will probably have to go through it all again!

I could really do without this wave. They seem to hit us when we are least expecting it. Going to sleep one night feeling well and waking the next day in a wave.

I am dreading the op as am scared of the after effects of the anaesthetic and maybe that is what is in my subconscious!  At least once I get over it I can make headway with tapering off the little bit of Venlafaxine I take which will make me feel a lot more proactive.

Hope all is good with those of you I know.

Hi flowers !

Good to hear from you - I’m not on here all that much so it’s nice to see you pop up !

Im so glad you had such a great 5 months, it’s such a good feeling , feeling good !

Sorry about the dip - it’ll pass, whether antibiotic related or not , you’ll go back to feeling good again :)

i know what it’s like - I’ve been feeling really good for about a year and then out of nowhere I get hit with anxiety and depression. It’s a combination of things but it’s easing now after a few weeks of feeling ho-hum.

i don’t know much about surgery and anesthetics but I hope it all goes well .

after the operation you really have a lot to look forward too. It’s hard to realise sometimes , but we’ll both be tapering in the near future and with the reduction of these drugs we’re getting our lives and our selves back .

Be well

love and hugs

Started Citalopram in 2005 (aged 15) for apparent "OCD" - 60mg

July 2015 attempted 2 x 10% + cuts 4 weeks apart. WD symptoms intense at times. Need to slow down.

November 2016 - Resumed taper. 1.25 - 1.5% decrease weekly approx.

44.5mg November 2016. Jan 2017 42.5 mg. March 2017 40 mg. June 2017 37mg. September 2018 22mg. Nov 2018 Holding at 22mg to stabilise from moderate wave. January 2020 - Holding, mostly feeling fine, but still having some waves at times.

February 2020 - Resumed taper , 1.5% reduction weekly/every two weeks.

Hello Nick!  It so lovely to hear from you.

You have done so well  on your taper and you should be really  proud of yourself.

Sorry you have been in a bit of dip but it looks like it is passing now. I don't know about you but I have to be very careful I don't do too much and get tired and also can't stand too much stress anymore.  These are my triggers as I think they are for a lot of people.

I hope life is treating you well and you are obviously still keeping fit and enjoying all your sporting activities. I guess Spring/Summer is not far off for you while we are getting a lot of rain (badly needed) and heading through Autumn into Winter.  Have a great summer in the sun!

My window was fantastic and to think you felt well for a year - that is amazing!

Like you say, and thank you for your support and cheering me up, we will feel good again and can continue on  this journey.

Keep in touch. I will be thinking of you.

Love and hugs back

I know that well.

Good call on alerting your anesthesiologist. When I had hernia surgery I woke up completely freaked out from the anesthetic. Next time I had to go under I told them about that reaction, they did not use that same drug and I came out of it feeling fine.

Congrats on the 5 month window. I would expect you'll pull out of this dip soon.

Hi, Flowers!

I've no actual experience with anesthesia, but I know several in withdrawal who have.  I know Versed (a Benzo) is commonly used.  I would think one would want to avoid that!!

XOXO

Zoloft 100 mg. daily for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome since Oct. 1994 / Synthroid 88 mcg. daily / Supplements: Neptune Krill Oil-1,000 mg. twice daily/Astaxanthin 10 mg. twice daily/Ubiquinol 100 mg. twice daily (These 3 have allowed me to discontinue (approved by doctor) bp meds I was on. Calcium Citrate 500 mg. daily/Vitamin D3 2,400 iu daily/K2 (MK7) 100 mcg daily (osteopenia and fam. hist. of severe osteoporosis). Stress B Complex (1/2 dose)/Quercetin (for allergies/asthma)/Magnesium (400 mg. oral glycinate and about 50 mg. magnesium chloride spray oil a day, divided throughout day).

Tapered Zoloft about 6 wks. Totally off since the end of July (25-29, 2014). 3 wks. vertigo at end of taper, then 3-4 wks. OK, followed by withdrawal symptoms increasing in severity (nausea, gastric disturbances, loss of appetite, insomnia, restlessness, jitters, anxiety, agitation--jumping out of my skin--possible akathisia?) Seem to have paradoxical reactions to everything new, even Vitamin C. Severity of akathisia comes and goes, but is constant to some degree. Hard to leave house, and cannot be home alone. (Retired)

Thank for visiting my thread and nice to meet you.

It is reassuring to hear that you had a better time once you had your second anaesthetic.  I am hoping I will be OK and not still in this wave when the time comes!

Hi!  How lovely to hear from you again and thanks for the tip re Versed.

I have just been looking back at my notes from the last consultation in April this year and Propofol was suggested to be used to give me the minimum problems. It still doesn't stop me feeling scared though!

How are you doing these days?

(Retired)

Am gearing myself up for the appointment with my Surgeon tomorrow and reflecting on how all my carefully laid plans for this year have gone down the pan!

Just want to recap really so something is recorded here.

Early in the year I was getting abdo pain. After a couple of months of tests I was found to have gallstones and the Surgeon advised removing my gall bladder and suggested a low fat diet.

I wasn't feeling too bad withdrawal wise and was really hoping I could start tapering off the small amount of Venlafaxine I am still taking.  Once I got the news I would be having surgery however I decided to put this on hold until afterwards.

Then in May I went into a fabulous 5 month window and felt so well. Some WD symptoms over that time but feeling good generally. I sailed through work during the busy season here and had several lovely holidays away - even managed to get on a plane again. The anxiety that plagues me was gone.

While I was away in July the hospital here rang me to get me in for surgery the next day which of course I couldn't make. This happened once more when I was still away and they put me to the back of the waiting list.

All out of the blue about a month ago I started to feel run down and got various minor things like an ulcerated mouth and throat and a cold and ended up on antibiotics that usually don't trigger WD.  This was the arrival of a huge wave which is still hitting me now. I am nauseous, have diarrhea, no appetite, shaky and weak , and wake in the early hours with my heart banging, pelvic and bladder pain. Anxiety goes on all day. I get a little relief when I take the xanax twice a day but am trying to manage this with relaxation exercises and  mindfulness. I normally try to get out every day for a walk in the fresh air which helps a lot but I find being around people too stimulating and makes my symptoms worse.

I do not feel I could go through surgery when  feeling as unstable as this. I haven't been in so much pain since I started the low fat diet so don't think I am an emergency.

I am absolutely dreading going to the Surgeon tomorrow as feel I have to try and explain what is going on in WD.  He probably won't understand this so I may just say I have bouts of anxiety and depression!  I am not sure  if they will be prepared to operate on me when I am in a window as it is so hit and miss but I will ask anyway. This is being done in the health system so you cannot choose a date to have surgery.  Needless to say my symptoms have ramped up these past few days due to having to go to the hospital tomorrow. I hate anything to do with Dr's and I just can't think straight.

Has anyone faced these problems or has any advice to give me for tomorrow? I really would appreciate some thoughts.

Hi Flowers - I am so sorry you are going through this awful wave and then have this surgery also on your mind.  I am wondering if your surgeon will order repeat imaging that, fingers crossed, shows improvement in the gallstones since you've been on the low fat diet.  Then maybe surgery won't be on the table anymore or at least can be pushed aside until you feel better (although I see the conundrum that while we are in withdrawal "feeling better" is unpredictable).  I am hoping someone who has been through withdrawal and surgery at the same time will chime in.  In the meantime, you seem to be riding this wave with your usual courage and strength.  I am thinking about you - WR.

-1/06 - 3/07 Cymbalta. Fast taper (essentially CT); withdrawal symptoms after 4 mos (didn't realize was WD)

-10/07: 100 mg Zoloft; 1 mg Klonopin - tapered off Klonopin after 4 mos. Several unsuccessful slow tapers of Zoloft; went up and down in dose a lot

-Spring 2013 back on 1 mg Klonopin to counter WD symptoms; switched over 5-6 mos from Zoloft to 35 mg citalopram
-Two attempts at slow tapering citalopram, always increased dose due to WD; also increased Klonopin to 1.25 mg in 2014, then to 1.5 mg in 2015

-8/17-9/17: After holding one year at 20 mg, feeling withdrawal symptoms due to stress - slowly increased to 25 mg. No change in symptoms after 6 months (? tolerance ?)  - decided to start citalopram taper February 2018 (still on Klonopin 1.5 mg).

Supplements: fish oil; magnesium; vitamin D3; curcumin

Citalopram taper:  2/2018 - 12/2019: 25 mg - 11.03 mg I 2020: 10.89 mg - 7.9 mg I 2021: 7.8 mg - 5.26 mg I 2022: 5.2 mg - 3.36 mg I 2023: 3.3 mg - 1.47 mg 2024: 1/5/24: 1.44 mg; 1/19/24: 1.40 mg; 1/26/24: 1.37 mg; 2/2/24: 1.34 mg; 2/9/24: 1.31 mg; 2/23/24: 1.28 mg; 3/1/24: 1.25 mg; 3/8/24: 1.22 mg; 3/15/24: 1.19 mg

Hi wantrelief

Thanks so much for coming back and giving some good advice. I can't think straight at the moment so it has really helped!

I am hoping the same thing - that I can ask the Surgeon to do another scan to check things out. I don't mind staying on a low fat diet to avoid surgery! I haven't had any extreme attacks of pain since May when I was diagnosed with the gallstones. Sometimes it is uncomfortable but manageable.

The problem is when will I ever feel well to have the  surgery if it is necessary?  I don't want them filling me up with sedatives etc to get me in there.   Subconsciously anxiety about the op could have brought on the wave but who can tell.

This time tomorrow it will all be over and I hope I have some positive news to report. Thank you for saying so but I don't feel couragious or strong, just a quivering wreck!

Thank you once again for your thoughts.

How are you doing? I see you are still tapering away. I am full of admiration for you.

Love from Flowers xxx

This time tomorrow it will all be over and I hope I have some positive news to report. Thank you for saying so but I don't feel couragious or strong, just a quivering wreck!

I so hope you have some positive news to report as well!  I know you may not feel courageous or strong but you are....just getting through a wave takes so much courage and strength and on top of it all, you are bravely going to your appointment tomorrow.  I really hope your wave improves after your appointment when there is a plan in place that you feel comfortable with.

I see you are still tapering away. I am full of admiration for you

Aw, thank you so very much for saying that Flowers.  It is scary not knowing how this tapering thing is going to go and there is such a long road ahead.  At least I've got good friends, such as yourself, to keep me company.  :)

Please keep us posted how your appointment goes tomorrow.  I will be thinking about you and sending good thoughts your way!

Well stress levels certainly went through the roof at the hospital yesterday!  I saw a different Surgeon this time.

The Dr was very understanding when I said I may have to cancel my surgery if feeling too bad in a wave. I just said I suffered from anxiety and depression and didn't mention WD. She said it wouldn't result in me being taken off the list if I couldn't make it. So I shouldn't have been taken off the list when I couldn't attend in the summer although I was in a window but out of the country. She also reassured me I am not an urgent case.

The worst bit was that she was very thorough and discovered that I haven't had the right scan to proceed with the op. The gall stones were discovered by chance when doing an ultrasound scan for something else and it was just a general scan of the abdomen. I apparently need to have a more detailed scan of the gall bladder, liver etc - the biliary tract. So if I had gone in for surgery they wouldn't have been able to do it without the proper scan. So it seems  I have been waiting all these months for nothing! I now have to start from scratch and have all the pre op checks done again and whatever scans they feel necessary.  I was so stressed out I had a bit of a meltdown.

It hasn't helped being in this dreadful wave.

Hello Joy. How lovely to see you on here.

Yes, you are right - it was positive that they were understanding which was what I was worried about really. I am not doing anything with doses at the moment as after a lovely 5 month window am in a horrible wave and want to be stable for surgery.

I am glad you are managing.  Weekends with your brother and mother sound lovely and a break for you. Hope things improve even more soon.

Keep in touch.

Hi WR.  It was awful!   Yes, the Dr was very compassionate which was wonderful. Nothing is ever easy in WD is it? Any little stressors send me over the edge!

Thank you for thinking of me. How is your weekend going? Hope you are doing OK?

Update Time!

Not been on here much so hope all who I know are doing well.  I have been busy with various issues.............

Still going on with pre op checks re gall bladder removal  - see Anaesthetist on Feb 4 - but have been told not an emergency so pushing things to the back of my mind.

Uppermost, I have been having some issues with inter dose withdrawal from Xanax which Shep has been helping me with over on my Benzo thread.

Its been hard living with the anxiety and then I got bronchitis and asthma just after New Year and ended up in Emergency on oxygen and asthma meds. Am feeling better from that thank goodness.

Had a horrid day today when a cafe I was in gave me 'real' coffee in error. I can't tolerate the stimulating effects  of caffeine and always ask for decaff. It is too much of a coincidence that the intense  symptoms started just after drinking two large mugs of the stuff!  Ended up in Emergency again (they will be sick of  me) as heart really thumping, shaking, feeling sick and so hyper I couldn't keep still. On examination  heart rate was normal.  Dr told me taking caffeine with an anxiety disorder is so stimulating to the CNS it can bring on a massive panic attack which is what I was having.  He gave me my night time dose of the benzo early which took the edge off but still having symptoms. Been told to flush out system with loads of water and I should be feeling better after 24 hours.

So all in all not a good start to the year and I feel as though I am falling to bits.   Things can only get better.

Hi Joy

I am so sorry and completely missed your post.  Anxiety is the worst isn't it?  Unfortunately, I have got myself into this situation with Xanax and am hoping that I can get some relief spacing out the doses. Shep has been a star helping me with this.

Nice to see you on here Joy.
