ikam: tapering escitalopram

Karen, it generally gets worse in the quieter times, as we "tune" more to this sound...

Apparently we all have it, but people with tinnitus can hear it, until they re-learn to manage it, which is called habituation...

This book is so great: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/1847090834/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I have much better understanding; also there are some CBT strategies...

- 12.03.2021- doxepin- 50mg

- 6.11.2020- 75mg

- 16.10.2020- 100mg

- 30.09.2020- doxepin- 125mg

- May 2020, omeprazole 40mg switched to esomeprazole 20mg

- 2012 re-started Doxepin 75mg, evening. Increased to 150mg

- 2012, Atenolol 25mg, twice a day

- 2016, Low dose of HRT in evening, Sandrena and Utrogestan

- Long term of Nasal spray Otrivine

- 2012, PPI Omeprazole 40mg-evening

24.10.2014- Started ESCITALOPRAM-first 5mg and then 10mg; due to the adverse symptoms reduced on 5.01.2015- Escitalopram- 2.5mg 22.07.2016- re-started reduction by 1% at a time. Completed tappering on  19.03.2020 😇

Does tinnitus ever go away?

Studies have indicated that, even without any ‘treatment’, the noises disappear or at least diminish in the majority of cases, as the brain loses interest in and stops surveying the signal. This process is called ‘habituation’ and it can take several months or years.

Tinnitus can become emotionally distressing in the initial period. This is commonly due to misconceptions as to the cause, prognosis and management of tinnitus.

There is also a general feeling of not being taken seriously by the medical profession. Many are told: ‘It is not serious, there is no cure, and you have to learn to live with it’. It can be argued that this is, to a certain extent true.

In most cases there is not a serious underlying medical condition and you will gradually learn to stop paying attention to the tinnitus noises, in the same way that you ignore all the other ‘predictable’ noises of daily life. Reaction to these sounds are more dependent on your frame of mind and reaction, than the actual sound itself.

Apart from the book I stated in my previous post:

Louder today, the tinnitus, always louder when it is time to rest...

I am trying to ignore it...

It comes in waves, it is always there, only my awareness fluctuates, making it less or more loud...

It is a constant hiss, somewhere inside my head...

I understand Ikam, thanks for explaining.

Hope very much you'll get answers from having an MRI and continue with your healing.

Sorry to hear that you're in pain (again).  It could mean some physio (or similar) treatment will be required to untrap the offending nerve.

I need to get my body back to shape...

It seems that lots of my symptoms are associated with lack of essential nutrients, minerals...

Tappering just adds to my out of balance functioning...

The noise, tinnitus has not been so bad today...

I restarted iron and electrolytes, I will add multivitamin but I have it in liquid, so I will start slowly from one drop...

Hopefully, my referral to hematology will be send soon...

I just want to be more energetic, get on my bike, cut grass in the garden etc.

Hi Ikam,

Sorry to hear of your nerve troubles in your leg.

I think if you were paralyzed then you would have reason to be afraid of not walking again.

But you can walk, and I think you probably just need some manipulation to help untrap the offending nerve(s) and free you of those tingling sensations.

I don't mean to sound flippant about this, but you will be ok scary though the investigations are.

TC,

JC

Feeling much better, it seems iron is working. I added two drops of multi a day. Managing well...

I have more energy and less pain.

Tinnitus has been less bothering...

Now have to get dentist out of the way and restart tapper...

I hope I will be better now with tapering as my body is stronger...

I have missed tomorrow...

Last week met physio who explained to me a link between hypermobilityty and pain. It makes sense...

She suggested Pilates, walking and generally being active...

I hadn't realised that I was so depleted in iron and minerals...

I have changed my diet in December, lost around 5kg...feeling better in my body...

I'm so glad to ear that things are turning around Ikam. Get this all sorted and you'll be on your way again. Hope things go well with the dentist.

Brass

20 years on Paxil starting at 20mg and working up to 40mg. Sept 2011 started 10% every 6 weeks taper (2.5% every week for 4 weeks then hold for 2 additional weeks), currently at 7.9mg. Oct 2011 CTed 15oz vodka a night, to only drinking 2 beers most nights, totally sober Feb 2013.

Since I wrote this I have continued to decrease my dose by 10% every 6 weeks (2.5% every week for 4 weeks and then hold for an additional 2 weeks). I added in an extra 6 week hold when I hit 10mg to let things settle out even more. When I hit 3mgpw it became hard to split the drop into 4 parts so I switched to dropping 1mgpw (pill weight) every week for 3 weeks and then holding for another 3 weeks.  The 3 + 3 schedule turned out to be too harsh so I cut back to dropping 1mgpw every 4 weeks which is working better.

Final Dose 0.016mg.     Current dose 0.000mg 04-15-2017

That's wonderful news Ikam!

As my Naturopath told me, it takes time for the body to replenish itself when we put back in the nutrients it needs, and for the balance to get tipped the other way.

Keep up the good work x

I have had a hard time in balancing myself, as additionally have been going through health investigations, dentist, etc. After a colonoscopy (under anaesthetic + "complete" wash out of the nutrients after a bowel prep), I felt really unwell; I still have a bit of tinnitus, but not so bad. The electric shock in my leg seems to have gone...But I had MRI yesterday (hope the results will not show anything) and I will have a nerve conduction study...

The dentist is going to be quite extreme...I had 2 root canal treatments (lots of anaesthetics, after each I had some achy problem in my ear); I will have now five teethes pulled out (again after local anaesthetics)...I expect to be in pain- hence will take painkillers...

But my body is in a much better shape...I started the diet in December + supplements, but stopped supplements for colonoscopy, restarted around 40 days ago...

I additionally put 4 drops of B Complex liquid http://www.metabolics.com/blog/vitamin-b-complex/ to my protein smoothie in the morning and I have no additional symptoms...

Update...

just few words as this adds to my progress...holding...

around 5 days ago I had 5 teeth extracted and temporary denture put straight to my mouth...

I had lots of local anaesthetic to my gums...lots of painkillers + antibiotic...

I am still in pain, my jaw, the wound, but also ongoing headaches, hence still taking painkillers...

tinnitus is much worse, and I tend to consider this sign as my system overload...

exhaustion is back, but not for all day, I am better in the morning...

my sleep is disturbed, waking up a lot...

sweating is much worse...

I wish I was pain free...I am not...but I understand that is normal in this situation...

I had been really tense up to the procedure...it was not "nice", but had to be done...the dental surgeon was really good...

so, of course, I am holding...

Hi Ikam:

I'm sorry you had to go through all that dental work. It's no fun at all.

I really think these antidepressants have something to do with it because since I've been on Lexapro, I've had 5 back teeth pulled. I used to have great teeth.

I hope you feel better soon. :)

Take care,

Frogie xx

PREVIOUS medications and discontinuations: Have been on medications since 1996.

Valium, Gabapentin, Lamictal, Prilosec and Zantac from 2000 to 2015 with a fast taper by a psychiatrist.

Liquid Lexapro Nov, 2016 to 31-March, 2019 Lexapro free!!! (total Lexapro taper was 4 years-started with pill form)

---CURRENT MEDICATIONS:Supplements:Milk Thistle, Metamucil, Magnesium Citrate, Vitamin D3, Levothyroxine 25mcg, Vitamin C, Krill oil.

Xanax 1mg 3x day June, 2000 to 19-September, 2020 Went from .150 grams (average weight of 1 Xanax) 3x day to .003 grams 3x day. April 1, 2021 went back on 1mg a day. Started tapering May 19, 2023. July 28, 2023-approximately .87mg. Dr. fast tapered me at the end and realized he messed up. Prescribe it again and I am doing "slower than a turtle" taper.

19-September, 2020 Xanax free!!! (total Xanax taper was 15-1/2 months-1-June, 2019-19-September, 2020)

Yeah, it is good to see this...

Good luck with you job hunting :)

Have you been on 2.5mg since Nov 2015?

I don't seem to be able to get beyond 2.2mg...I am unsure how much of this is my anxiety that I will get out of balance and how much being sensible? Or possibly both?

I have been holding, but each time I think about tapering something else seems to e restricting me from making this choice. I worry that I will never take a decision for a next step, as there is always something...

I seem to be better with iron deficiency (started my own protocol, as I have been waiting for NHS treatment almost one year), I am taking liquid ionic iron and lactoferrin I have managed to add few drops of B complex to my morning shake.

But in the meantime, two weeks ago I had teeth extraction and antibiotics and painkillers with codeine; I am trying to tapper codeine...

I am much stronger, more balanced...

Sometimes I think that it was possible that I had had so severe response to tapering as I was iron deficient and anaemic...

Hi Ikam,

My tinnitus goes up a few notches when I'm stressed.  It'll suddenly go very high pitched.

I have learned to live with it and consider it to be one of my least concerning symptoms.

I have noticed that it increases when I have some conflicting matters to deal with, as if my mind was over-whelmed...I want to do an extra training, but this means I need to get out of my comfort zone and be really good with planning...it will be worth in the end but I do worry if I will manage...

I will be in training over the 6 weekends spread in one year...+ I will need to do extra reading, writing, etc.

It all coupled with another exciting extra work...on top of my 37.5hours week...

I know if I only organise myself well I will be able to do it...

But my mind creates this noise in my head...not nice...but when I will be more occupied it will be better...

If I do both the course and extra work I will be able to pay my debts and think about more quality retirement...

Sometimes I also think that maybe I am too old...am I?

Ikam,

That's awesome!!

You will do it, and the fact that you've put yourself onto a course in your own time (outside of work) is testimony to the fact that you're getting well.

No, you're NEVER too old to "better" yourself, and if it helps increase your income and help towards a better retirement, then even MORE reason to go for it :)

Well done you Ikam!!

Sounds like you have an exciting opportunity, if you feel up to it.

Like you said organize yourself and you could accomplish it. It sounds like you can accomplish anything.

And no you are not too old. :)

Despite being on iron supplement, diet, probiotics, supergreen etc. my ferritin level got even lower than in April and was just a bit more than 4. I got an iron infusion today...

IT seems that I may have been long iron deficient, but I did not know. I considered most my symptoms as related to WD...

I think we need to be mindful that there may be something else than WD...

I hope I will not get any side effects from Iron. It was called ferinject.

When I asked at haematology clinic about side effects of iron infusion, they said that there are none. I am really surprised, as I think it is usual that body needs to adapt to a different substance, in this case iron.

So I have had a type of anxiety, jittery feelings, more tired and sleep disturbance...more irritation...also fatigue...I read that it takes around two weeks to get settled...

I was used to a low ferritin and I had felt okeysh with it; now my body needs to adjust to a higher level of iron...

I feel trapped in meds. Anything I do upsets the balance. Iron infusion affected me, increasing anxiety...

I have problem with iron absorption, which I'd most likely due to taking PPI...

Cannot stop, decrease ppi,as this will affect antidepressants absorption...and increase my WD symptoms...

Cannot make any decision about tappering, as constantly something else pops in...

I have been on painkillers with codeine, this adds to symptoms, as I am trying to stop them...

I don't know how to deal with tinnitus, I have it since colonoscopy and I think it relates to system overload with meds and stress...

I don't know what to do anymore...
