Why didn't they publish part 2? And did you submit to rxisk.org too? This is a tragedy of major proportions, it is a miracle you are still here!

What happened and how I arrived here: http://survivingantidepressants.org/index.php?/topic/4243-cymbaltawithdrawal5600-introduction/#entry50878

July 2016 I have decided to leave my story here at SA unfinished. I have left my contact information in my profile for anyone who wishes to talk to me. I have a posting history spanning nearly 4 years and 3000+ posts all over the site.

Thank you to all who participated in my recovery. I'll miss talking to you but know that I'll be cheering you on from the sidelines, suffering and rejoicing with you in spirit, as you go on in your journey.

That is so sad, but amazing how you have been able to articulate it. How did you and the journalist get connected? Your story is incredible, but there are others to be told.

1st round Prozac 1989/90, clear depression symptoms. 2nd round Prozac started 1999 when admitted to dr. I was tired. Prozac pooped out, switch to Cymbalta 3/2006. Diagnosed with bipolar disorder due to mania 6/2006--then I was taken abruptly off Cymbalta and didn't know I had SSRI withdrawal. Lots of meds for my intractable "bipolar" symptoms.

Zyprexa started about 9/06, mostly 5mg. Tapered 4/12 through12/29/12

Wellbutrin. XL 300 mg started 1/07, tapered 1/18/13 through 7/8/13

Oxazepam mostly continuously since 6/06, 30mg since 12/12, tapered 1.17.14 through 8.26.15

11/06 Lithium 600mg twice daily, 2.2.14 400mg TID DIY liquid, 2.12.14 1150mg, 3.2.14 1100mg, 3.18.14 1075mg, 4/14 updose to 1100mg, 6.1.14 900 mg capsules 7.8.14 810mg, 8.17.14 725mg, 8.24.24 700mg...10.22.14 487.5mg, 3.9.15 475mg, 4.1.15 462.5mg 4.21.15 450mg 8.11.15 375mg, 11.28.15 362.5mg, back to 375mg four days later, 3.4.16 updose to 475 (too much going on to risk trouble)

9/4/13 Toprol-XL 25mg daily for sudden hypertension, tapered 11.12.13 through 5.3.14, last 10 days or so switched to atenolol

7.4.14 Started Walsh Protocol

Thank you both.

CW, I don't know how I'm still here! I guess I'm clinging to the hope of recovery and a life and I care about those who need me here. I know others have suffered and are suffering dreadfully and they made it and are pushing through. I must too. Others have been where I am and recovered. So many on this board are suffering profoundly.

It's a typical story of akathisia and possible serotonin syndrome, really.

My story is sort of in my thread but the succinct version by the journalist tells the horror of it better. I try to hold back in my thread. I don't want to disturb people. I do get sort of, kind of windows sometimes.

Meimeiquest, the journalist posted on a Facebook group I am on and asked people if they wanted to talk to him about an article he was writing. I spoke to him and he felt mine was the right story.

CW, part 2 is available, but the link doesn't seem to work. Towards the top, there is a 'Related' heading and underneath, a few topics. Parts 2, 3 and 4 are entitled 'Better than well', 'Dead bodies' and 'I can't enjoy anything'.

I don't know much about the Canada Free Press or its readership but hopefully this will help raise awareness of the issue in some way and even prevent someone from taking these drugs. I hope so.

The only way out is through.

'Better than well', 'Dead bodies' and 'I can't enjoy anything'.

So that's what those titles were there for. I'll go back and read them.

I think your story is important and I would wish you had it all in your thread but if you don't, well then that's it, it's understandable. There are drugs I want to always be mindful of now: augmentin, cipro, compazine (akasthisia too). I used to just take anything the doc would suggest (only if I agreed to it myself) but now those are ones I really need to watch out for. If I am ever hospitalized those go in my 'allergic to' list. (Along with every AD in the PDR.)

Thanks CW. I'm not sure how much of my story is in my thread..it might be there. I can't remember! I will have to read the beginning of it at some point. I came here last march when I had just got off the drugs and got hit with withdrawal symptoms. I was getting help from the occasional ativan which gave me some relief at the time (I can't take it now) and I was relieved to be off the drugs. I knew nothing of withdrawal then. I do now!

WT,

Why didn't the doctor prescribe another antibiotic if it was necessary for you to take one instead of prescribing valium to deal with the side effects?   That is criminal.

Also, while of course, psychiatry definitely had a big time role in ruining your life, let's not forget the problem started with gross negligence on your PC's part.

I am sorry for the h-ll you went through.   I am so glad the reporter told your story.

Drug cocktail 1995 - 2010
Started taper of Adderall, Wellbutrin XL, Remeron, and Doxepin in 2006
Finished taper on June 10, 2010

Temazepam on a PRN basis approximately twice a month - 2014 to 2016

Beginning in 2017 - Consumption increased to about two times per week

April 2017 - Increased to taking it full time for insomnia

Hi compsports. Well, it's complicated. In the article it looks as if I went straight onto valium after the antibiotic but that didn't actually happen. There was a gap of about 4 weeks. When I had the reaction to augmentin, I thought I was going nuts and I went to hospital. They said it was definitely the antibiotics.

It was never confirmed that I had an infection. Doctors said it may be interstitial cystitis. I had been in a lot of pain for 3 months. Eventually I saw a doctor who suspected an infection and gave me the antibiotics. I rang her after I'd been to hospital and she agreed it was a reaction. I wasn't put on any more antibiotics..I was too scared. I ended up taking a garlic supplement called Allicin Max and eventually the pain went.

I didn't know what was happening to me. The worst of the reaction lasted 36 hours and after eventually sleeping, the nausea died down as did the agitation and suicidal feelings. I was normal in the evening. But after that I had nausea and retching every morning and kept getting derealisation and bouts of agitation. I'd suffered from panic disorder in the past and I didn't know if some of this was my own anxiety but I wasn't experiencing any of this before antibiotics. I ended up seeing a doctor who said it couldn't possibly be the antibiotics (even though it had been confirmed by the hospital that it was) and said it was anxiety. He was very pro psych drugs and wanted to put me on about 3 things at once. He said if I got side effects, I could take other drugs to counteract them. That horrified me. I didn't take the drugs and decided to fight through on my own.

Unfortunately, it wasn't easy beating what I was going through plus I had some things going on in my life that weren't helping me and I was going in and out of my anxiety, reaction or whatever it was. Much of the time I felt normal. One day I had a bad day and decided to try a valium. I took a 2mg tablet. It didn't really help. After that I had less sleep for a week. I'd been sleeping up to that point but my sleep went down to 5 hours a night. Plus I got more suicidal and found it harder to fight what I was going through. The derealisation got bad. A week after that first valium I had a bad day..I now think I may have had withdrawal from the valium. I took another thinking it might help me. It didn't.

The next day I went to the doctor .. A different one. That's when I was prescribed the citalopram. What I was experiencing was put down to anxiety and depression. I would do anything to go back to that day, not take the citalopram and throw away the valium. I know all of us here wish we could go back and change everything. Unfortunately, I took the citalopram. And after calling the doctor's surgery and telling them how bad I felt on the citalopram, I was told to stay on them and wait for them to kick in and for the side effects to pass. Oh, and to take some valium. They suggested upping it to 4mg. So I was on citalopram and the occasional valium for 2 months (the valium never worked) and now I have severe akathisia.

The only way out is through.

Last year I spoke to a journalist who writes for the Canada Free Press, to raise awareness. The article is here:

http://canadafreepress.com/index.php/article/68695

I have read the first part and looked up the first drug... it is known as amoxiclav here in Canada it was the drug I was given in I can't recall the year... but I took one pill in the morning set off on a trip and ended up calling an ambulance at the gas station the rest of the day was spent in hosp unconscious.

I did write about it here...

http://survivingantidepressants.org/index.php?/topic/1126-taking-antibiotics/page-3

going to read the rest.

Quetiapine (/kwɨˈt.əpn/ kwi-ty-ə-peen) (developed and marketed as Seroquel

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quetiapine

they are known by different names here i want people to know what drug we are talking about.

WARNING THIS WILL BE LONG
Had a car accident in 85
Codeine was the pain med when I was release from hosp continuous use till 89
Given PROZAC by a specialist to help with nerve pain in my leg 89-90 not sure which year
Was not told a thing about it being a psych med thought it was a pain killer no info about psych side effects I went nuts had hallucinations. As I had a head injury and was diagnosed with a concussion in 85 I was sent to a head injury clinic in 1990 five years after the accident. I don't think they knew I had been on prozac I did not think it a big deal and never did finish the bottle of pills. I had tests of course lots of them. Was put into a pain clinic and given amitriptyline which stopped the withdrawal but had many side effects. But I could sleep something I had not done in a very long time the pain lessened. My mother got cancer in 94 they switched my meds to Zoloft to help deal with this pressure as I was her main care giver she died in 96. I stopped zoloft in 96 had withdrawal was put on paxil went nutty quit it ct put on resperidol quit it ct had withdrawal was put on Effexor... 2years later celexa was added 20mg then increased to 40mg huge personality change went wild. Did too fast taper off Celexa 05 as I felt unwell for a long time prior... quit Effexor 150mg ct 07 found ****** 8 months into withdrawal learned some things was banned from there in 08 have kept learning since. there is really not enough room here to put my history but I have a lot of opinions about a lot of things especially any of the drugs mentioned above.
One thing I would like to add here is this tidbit ALL OPIATES INCREASE SEROTONIN it is not a huge jump to being in chronic pain to being put on an ssri/snri and opiates will affect your antidepressants and your thinking.

As I do not update much I will put my quit date Nov. 17 2007 I quit Effexor cold turkey.

I can't believe he admits it all

"Most antidepressants belong to a class of drugs called Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors, or SSRI’s. Despite their alleged selectivity, these drugs have been touted for a dizzying variety of human woes, including depression, anxiety, eating disorders, phobias, obsessions, compulsions, drug and alcohol addiction, migraine headaches, social phobia, schizophrenia, post-traumatic stress disorder, panic disorder, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, borderline personality disorder, and something called “premenstrual dysphoric disorder.”"

I guess he can say anything as he is not quoting anyone or any science... yet he studied biology....he knows.. in his gut he knows that is why he is choosing this story...your story.

I have to admit to having read every book he speaks of and know every study he is talking about.  I guess this is what I do now, not by choice.

I noticed the list of side effects for amoxiclav on wiki did not list any of the psych issues. I wonder how many other drugs are the same .. when I told the pharmacist of my reaction he said it was impossible.

One more thing that is on my mind as my mind wonders I know some people who know some people that work in the plants where these drugs are made and a few of them in Canada were closed down by inspection for not doing the work right...how do we really know what is in those drugs... maybe it is time for all pharma drugs to be taken over and made by the state... or just made by the state and pricing pharma out. ... we have to make a change a major change pharma is not going to do it why would they??? they love this.

To you WT

"“I think of how independent I was, and creative, how capable I was. I was someone who used to do stuff for people all the time, and now I’m not able to do anything at all."

To those of us who are going to beat this one way or another keep fighting the good fight keep coming here and talking one of these days the tide will turn.  Thank you for your courage in putting your story out there.

I wish you peace.

I've just tried my first multiquote. I hope I've done it properly!

You had one heck of a reaction to the augmentin, btdt. I remember you telling me about it once. Wolfhound, on this board, also had problems with augmentin. She took it about the same time as I did and ended up on psych drugs and had akathisia.

I think it's the clav acid (can't remember the full name) in it. I read somewhere that at one stage it was going to be used to develop an antidepressant. That says it all, doesn't it? I think the amoxicillin part is probably fine. It's the acid that isn't.

When I reacted to the pills, I looked at the side effects leaflet and I remember seeing agitation and difficulty sitting still listed as serious side effects. Anxiety was on there too and, I think, hyperventilation. I was hyperventilating on it.

The only way out is through.

May the best hope will be our soldiers ...

when it comes out the ptsd is caused by the pills maybe that will be enough....if it ever comes out.

Yes you're absolutely right. Many soldiers commit suicide and it's blamed on PTSD rather than on psych drugs.

A friend of mine told me recently that soldiers were being drugged up with an anti malaria drug that is known to cause psychosis and has been banned. There is an article about it somewhere.

By the way, I think the reason the journalist chose my story was that he wanted the emphasis to be specifically about medications causing suicide. I became suicidal on augmentin and citalopram plus other drugs.

The only way out is through.

Thanks for clarifying.

Sadly, that doctor who said that that additional drugs could be used to counteract drug side effects is pretty much stating what is standard procedure for psychiatry in general.   Kind of chilling but not shocking.

Wow, is all I can say for the horrific atrocities you went through.

Yes, that doctor was SOOOO pro psych meds and very dismissive of my reaction to the Augmentin. He would happily have had me on about 8 different meds.

Thank you for your kind words.

Well, if I can recover from this mess, I will write a success story that will hopefully help people.

For now...more pushing through and waiting for a window.

They are still giving it out yep.

We had a person resign here because of this drug... it is mentioned in this article. this is her but this article is about ADs

Dr. Michelle Brill-Edwards is a former senior physician at Health Canada who advised on the safety of drugs. She resigned in the mid-90s after she says she became disillusioned with how the agency functioned – one of her complaints being the agency’s lack of transparency.

“The secrecy afforded to companies is extraordinary and completely against the public interest,” says Brill-Edwards. “It’s our tax dollars that fund Health Canada despite the fees that are being paid as well by the industry so we should have a right of access but we don’t.”

http://globalnews.ca/news/482456/drug-reactions-the-effectiveness-of-antidepressants/

The thing is the US has banned the antimalaria drug ONLY  for Special Forces - perhaps because they handle the most damaging weapons as a rule... I know very little about the US army.  I a relative of mine took the drug and he was in SF here in the Canadian army so I do keep an eye on this one. Many soldiers are given Ads too ...to keep them going when they really need rest and care.  I could go on and on about this but do not want to wear on your good nature by completely hijacking your thread.

Why Learn about Adverse Drug Reactions (ADR)?
Institute of Medicine, National Academy Press, 2000
Lazarou J et al. JAMA 1998;279(15):1200–1205
Gurwitz JH et al. Am J Med 2000;109(2):87–94

  • Over 2 MILLION serious ADRs yearly
  • 100,000 DEATHS yearly
  • ADRs 4th leading cause of death ahead of pulmonary disease, diabetes, AIDS, pneumonia, accidents and automobile deaths
  • Ambulatory patients ADR rate—unknown

Adverse drug reactions are bad enough as you can see by this FDA own doc.

Add in the drug - drug interactions where who knows what your going to get it is a like playing Russian Roulette yet as you say it is common and how they do business without really knowing how the interactions will affect you.

" additional drugs could be used to counteract drug side effects is pretty much stating what is standard procedure"

This is how I got put on Effexor to counteract another drug if I were to go back this is likely how I got put on most drugs I have taken in my life... I think the Amoxiclav was to treat the nasal sinus issues that would not go away when I was in pooped out...

I am looking for the garlic supplement you used WT ...that was my reason to visit with you today... as you can see I am easily side tracked can't seem to stay on task once I get to this board there are just too many things I care about here.

The people.... my family says caring is going to be the death of me... can't think of a better way to go.

Yes there may be one ... or is one with some of this information in it... and one about

Allicin Max  there may be one about it too but has nothing in the name to suggest Garlic so I would never find it... lol I was searching SA for garlic for a time before I recalled I read about it in your thread... I am going to get some today... so needed the name.

I spend a lot of my time trying to find the names of things I can't recall. One of the withdrawal hangover effects for me that has not gone.

I hope you have a good day... we will get to all those threads eventually... some may be there already.

peace to you WT

I never shop online not ever.  I no longer have a credit card since my fall from financial grace... I actually sent the ones I had back as I knew I was in a bad time... like sliding down a slippery slope no job no saving no money... my next step was to send the credit cards back as I was not getting in to debt on top of everything else... I could not trust myself after spending 100 grand in 3 months.

Now I live on assistance and shop in the cheapest stores I can find.  I have had second thoughts about the Allicin Max now that I know it raises testosterone ...

I actually was going to try a cream testosterone long ago when I was on pp thought it might help some issues I had the idea was stopped dead in it's tracks by people there with more experience than I.

I do not need to fool with my hormones, I don't think.

thanks for the info.

peace to you

WT,

Do you follow that akasthisia blog that has been mentioned and did you ever make a comment there about your healing? I am just curious. Her experience is what made me add 'compazine' to the list of drugs I am 'allergic' to. (I reality, I have no drug allergies that I know of but I have not had to be medicated with anything since experiencing protracted wd.)

Hi CW. Yes I do. I discovered the blog at the end of December 2013. I'd had a doctor use the term akathisia and describe it as restless legs (which it's not) and I didn't look it up and the time because I'd been told not to scare myself by looking stuff up on the internet. More fool me. If I had looked it up, I'd never have ended up on the second lot of drugs, and I'd have got off the citalopram quicker.

I looked up akathisia at the end of December then found my way to the blog. When I read her story I thought, this is me! I related to every part of it. I got in touch with her and came off the drugs. I email her sometimes. She is so lovely and really comforting. She tells me I will heal. She's seen lots of people heal from akathisia.

The only way out is through.

Yes, that thing about 'looking up stuff on the internet' is tricky. Do it and you may get scared unnecessarily, don't do it and your experience was one of the things that can happen. As an ex-nurse, I always used read the full product inserts in drugs I was prescribed but never the side effects until after I had taken the drug for a while. I did not want to 'plant an idea in my head' that might keep me from taking a needed drug. I'd read the warnings and adverse effects, though. That was pre wd: now I am going to carefully scrutinize every bit of fine print and every nook and cranny of the internet first.

I only just skimmed the first few entries of the blog. I love blogs where the blogger actually answers commenters and gives support and amplifies their story. Did not see if she is still doing that.

Will Meacham (a blogger that used to write 'WillSpirit', that was linked to from beyondmeds) did the same thing for his commenters. Real people.

Thanks for answering my query! I am still reading the other parts of your story but am getting so distracted by stuff in many places on the board. There is not enough time to delve into everything I want to learn.

Thanks CW. She does still answer questions on the blog and sometimes emails people. If people ask for email contact, she will correspond with them that way. She has started an akathisia forum too.

A forum? How neat! I don't have time to look at it now but is it a good, strongly moderated one (to prevent misinformation and spam) like ours? If so, it would deserve a link in the topic where we have already linked to the blog. Akasthisia is horrible, I had it off and on in early wd. Mine was a feeling like I "wanted to jump out of my skin", a whole body reaction and I had to stifle the urge to scream or endlessly pace (or worse).
