Sorry dan you are also experiencing bad side effects. It seems we are on the same boat at some level. I don't actually measure the 1% cut for accuracy, I just estimate (1/6 of a drop of the liquid). So far I don't feel the inaccuracy is causing extra problem.

Well, guess we just have to pushing through like you said, and keep moving toward to the finish line when we have to.

I’m disappointed that my laziness and apathy has not improved one tiny bit as the dosage has lowered. I’m at a fraction of my original dose and still I wait to see a difference. Anhedonia has been with me all the way down. I have zero motivation to do anything and every day is such an immense struggle to get even the most basic of tasks done.

I’m starting to wonder if this has anything to do with side effects or withdrawal at all. What if this is my authentic personality? Lazy, fat and miserable.

I also hate the fact that my muscles have atrophied because of my inability to exercise and that I have steadily been gaining weight due to my inactivity. If I do survive antidepressants, I will have such a monumental task ahead of me to rebuild my body and my mind.

I am genuinely fearful that being on these drugs for so long has permanently damaged the reward and motivation part of my brain and this is as good as it gets.

I remain hopeful that the tapering process somehow sensitises us to these drugs and that even a tiny amount can cause side effects as we slowly come off of them. That once we get to zero all the side effects vanish and we can get on with real healing. I have to have faith that this is the truth, otherwise I will have unnecessarily sacrificed 2 years of my life for nothing. But, I’m not entirely convinced by this theory. Surely less drugs should mean less side effects.

It concerns me that there is a total lack of public awareness about antidepressant withdrawal. Where are all the survivors who got through withdrawal and recovered their lives? Why are they not angrily demanding compensation for this horror that they have had to endure? Why are they not vociferously warning people to stay away from these foul poisons? Where are all the websites and Facebook groups? There are loads of flat-earth, tin-foil hat conspiracy theories, but virtually nothing about the evils of SSRI’s. It just doesn’t make sense.

I find it hard to believe that out of the hundreds of millions of people on these drugs, that only a handful of people are having difficulty withdrawing. I know that most people are easily convinced about the original illness coming back, I believed it myself for many years. Something just seems very wrong about all this.

Has the damage been done? Have we sold our souls to the devil? Have we gained short term relief in exchange for a lifetime of misery?

Maybe this self-doubt is citalopram's last gasp effort to keep me in its grip. After all, they do say that it is darkest just before the dawn. I just don’t know what, or who, to believe anymore.

Dan,

I feel your pain (and share much of it).  I am tempted to do a series of quotes from your post and do a very lengthy response, but I'm at work and I have to get something done in short order (I thought of saying that I didn't have the motivation to do such a long response, but I thought it might not be appreciated  :P ).

I hate to put it in stark terms, Dan, but while you have been at this for a long time, you have not really been at this for such a long time in "withdrawal time."  It's been about 18 months since your started your "post-reinstatement taper" in the summer of 15.  While the suffering you have done during this period and before is inhumane and reprehensible, it is probably only par for the course for what most of us experience.  Look at Petunia as an example.  3 years + and starting to see a return of something approaching normalcy at times. I don't use these time frames to scare you -- rather they are intended to give you hope that there is still PLENTY of healing that will take place for you.  No, it does not happen only once you are off the meds -- it happens during the reduction as well -- but sometimes it happens more in bunches later in the process.  Bottom line -- we are all different and the healing experience is different for all.

There are plenty of people out there suffering.  Some are being told it is their underlying condition and go back on the meds or a different med.  Some feel crappy but attribute it to "aging" or, in the case of women "menopause."  Different people feel differently and there is no way to standardize the process -- nor is there any interest on the part of most (pharma included).

There is no way to know how this will turn out for any of us, however, always remember that the body has a natural inclination to heal.  Given time and an environment conducive to it, the body will tend to come to homeostasis at a place where it is "supposed to be."

Things will get better, Dan.  It may take a lot longer than any of us imagined or certainly planned, but things will get better.

Best,

Andy

Sertraline 50mg and Clonazapam .375mg from 2000 -- symptoms of dizziness Spring 2012

increased to .5 Clonazapam and 100mg Sertraline -- no improvement

Benzo microtaper from November 2012 to November 2014 (followed benzo sites "taper benzo first")

Started Sertraline taper in December 2014 cut by 25mg to 75mg; 62.5mg 1/1/15 and 50mg on 2/1/15

Held at 50mg through April 5 to use liquid
Reduced dosage in 10% or less drops from 50mg to 25mg -- at single tablet of 25mg on 10/5/15

Transitioned to all liquid for accuracy while tapering -- Horrible insomnia -- back to 25mg liquid and held until October 1, 2016

10/16 -- 11/18 tapered very slowly to 10.6mg.  No real improvement and never really stable so updosed to 12.5mg (1/2 a pill) for convenience and long hold.

After 8+ months of holding with no noticeable improvement decided to add .4ml of liquid Prozac (about 1.5mg) to see if that improves the situation

I now wonder if at least some of those reactions back into serious waves long after I had been free of them were caused by chemicals. Since you have moved too.. there may  be new things in your envirnment that could be setting your system off.  I know it sounds crazy but for some of us it is life.

You could be onto something there, B.

Modern houses are built with materials that are treated with all sorts of nasty chemicals. Most of my town was built in the 1850's when only natural materials were used. The house i am in now is the first new build I have ever lived in (was built in 1989.) So, it is quite possible that I am reacting to one of the many chemicals present in the structure. There's definitely an odd smell in here.

I don't like it here anyway. it feels claustrophobic because the ceilings are very low. It is very poorly constructed. I am going to move back into a proper house as soon as I can.

Moving house was so, so stressful and as we all know, any type of stress is bad for our delicate nervous systems. I seriously don't recommend moving home during withdrawal.  I think I'll wait until I'm drug free before attempting it again.

As for the seagull avatar. I live by the coast so there are gulls everywhere. I sort of view them as my guardian angels because, more than once, they have prevented me from having a panic attack. If I'm in a crowded place and start feeling panicky, I just focus my attention on the gulls, I watch them flying about or squabbling amongst themselves and it takes my attention away from the agoraphobia.

Hi Dan

Thanks for visiting my thread and I have replied to you there.

You have got down to such a low dose and have done so well. I know you want the drug out of your system as we all do but I would hate for you to get into difficulties at this stage by reducing too quick. The fact that you are still getting drowsy at such a low dose shows how strong these drugs are.

Have you found anyone on here that has tapered off Cit/Celexa successfully so you could see what they did towards the end?

Cit makes me drowsy too hence taking it at night. Is this what you do?

I take citalopram in the evening at about 8 o'clock. I've experimented with taking it at all sorts of different times, but I find this works best as it means I get drowsy at bedtime and dont feel too groggy in the morning.

Please don't worry about me coming off too quickly. I've got many months of this still to go. I'm going to get to 1mg and then go down in 0.1mgs all the way to zero, so probably wont be done before the summer.

Thanks for the encouragement, Andy.

I was sort of thinking out loud and feeling a bit sorry for myself, which I shouldn't do, as actually I'm doing okay and there are people on here that are both physically and mentally a lot worse off than myself.

January is the cruelest month and I'm just suffering from winter fatigue, something that I had long before the meds. Its the short, gloomy, cold, wet days. Its just not very nice and it gets me down. This time of year is hard for everyone, even those not going through what we're going through. Maybe I need to take some extra vitamin d? A holiday in the southern hemisphere would be nice.

You're spot-on about this taking far longer than we ever expected. I'm so bored of this now. I think I've done enough waiting. It seems like that's all I do is wait, ticking another day off the calendar and hoping that tomorrow will be better than today.

If you had told me at the start that it will probably take 3 years, I would have decided its not worth enduring that amount of suffering and gone back on at full dose and stayed there until science came up with a more humane way of withdrawing. Can I take another year of this? No, not really, but then I'm too stubborn to back down after putting all this effort and time into this.

Hi Dan

I think we have every right to feel sorry for ourselves after having to put up with all this stuff!!

I guess none of us can really know how we will be all the while we are still taking the drug. It could be the drug that is making you feel lethargic but most probably the time of year!!

It is usually sunny here but today has been grey and wet and it makes such a difference to my motivation and mood.

You had a lot of stress moving too so that won't have helped and if you are not really in your ideal home yet that won't help either!

We have lots of gulls here too and I love watching them flying peacefully overhead. I am not too keen on them at mating time though as they make so much noise as do the babies when they arrive.lol!

I got outside and saw a rare glimpse of the sun today. My mood has lifted noticeably. I think being stuck indoors on your own for too long can make anyone go a bit crazy.

I must make more of an efort to get outside. Although, having tendinitis in my right leg for the last few weeks didn't help matters.

Good news Dan on the lighter mood!

I drag myself out everyday for a short walk or stagger at the moment! If I didn't I would get so down.

Hope your leg improves soon.

I was due another reduction last weekend but had to postpone it due to a return of insomnia. It wasn’t anything serious, just woke up earlier than usual for a couple of days. But, I know better than to take any risks when it comes to sleep. Insomnia is the big red warning sign that will always stop me in my tracks.

I know from bitter experience how things can rapidly deteriorate when insomnia takes hold. It seems to create a cascade effect that ramps up all the other symptoms. For me, insomnia is the mother of withdrawal that spawns all the other symptoms. So, I did the only sensible thing and held my dose for an extra week just to make sure a wave wasn’t approaching.

Thankfully, It quickly settled down and I had sleep rebound by the end of the week. For the last few days I have been getting 9 – 10hrs of good quality, restorative sleep. So I’m back on schedule again now and down to 1.1mg.

Insomnia is the worst symptom ever! I slept on average 1-2 hour pr night for 2 months summer 2015. It was like living hell!

<p>Sept 2015: 5 mg Cipralex for 3 weeks. Lots of side effects. Reduced to 2.5 mg for 2 weeks. Experiencing withdrawal and side effects still after dose reduction. Quit after almost 4 weeks on 2.5 mg because of adverse effects. Experiencing withdrawal symptoms still. Reinstating 1mg after 3 weeks. Reduced to 0.50 after 2 days due to sensitive reaction (dysautonomia) and trip to ER. January 2016: After 14 months of tapering from 0.5 mg im now down to 0.08mg. Planing on one more drop before 4-8 weeks healing, then jump to zero. 14.03.17: Lexapro free!

I can be so slow at replying to my thread sometimes. When I'm being slow, its nothing personal. I still struggle with writing and getting my thoughts out of my brain and onto the page can be really difficult. Other times, words flow really easily and I'll write tons and tons.

I am always glad when people take the time to write on my thread, especially as I know how everyone on here is having such a horrible time with their own withdrawal.

Great sense about insomnia.
Sending hugs for the new cut.

Lex, thanks for the hugs, they are gratefully received.

Cipramillion, totally agree about it being a living hell. I had a very similar experience in 2015. It almost pushed me over the edge.

I am going to write a proper post about insomnia soon. A lot of people are struggling with sleep issues and I want to give some encouragement that sleep quality and quantity does eventually improve.

Withdrawal is so deceitful. It lies to us and convinces us that whatever symptoms we are suffering from at this present time have always been with us, and will be with us forever. This is simply not true.

I recently posted that anhedonia has been a constant companion. It hasn’t, I looked back through my diaries and saw many instances where I have been active. Last spring I spent a whole week fixing my car. Then there was the hundreds of hours that I spent tending my garden.

I’m really going to miss the lovely big garden that I had at my old house. I’m certainly going to need to find a replacement activity that will get me out of the house and fill my time now that spring is just around the corner.

Anyway, right now I’m still feeling unmotivated and apathetic. But, I know it won’t last forever, nothing ever does, and one day everything will click into place and I can start living again.

I try to stay as positive as possible. It's all too easy to slip into negativity during WD. The negative thoughts start off small and insignificant, but they have a habit of quickly multiplying and growing inside the withdrawal affected brain until they become all encompassing and you can think of nothing else.

I don't think I would have gotten this far if I had given in to all the negativity that is associated with withdrawal. The process can certainly teach us some important life lessons. Although, it is a classroom that I would rather not have had to attend.

hi Dan, just read thru most of your thread over the past week or so. I love your writing style, even when you're having a rough day, more often than not, you are able to put a positive spin on it. Or at least come back to that positive place quickly.

in a wave myself today, cruel WD as I had a good window yesterday and had made plans for today, anticipating getting lots of things done that have been put off too long.

Now I feel like I'm going to have to force myself just to do those things that absolutely must be done, sigh

but I am holding on tight to that good day yesterday!! It was not my only one, there have been many. And there will be more!!

when we are in a wave, it's so easy to forget that there were better days and give in to despair.

it's a long process, for sure, but there are breaks in the misery and more than that, even, we only have to endure one miserable moment at a time.

who knows, the next moment could very well be the start of a window opening!!

keep holding on.

I haven’t been on here lately, because not an awful lot has changed. I got to 1mg and noticed that I wasn’t noticing any real difference in symptoms when I made a drop. So, I cut the dose faster and still didn’t really notice any change in withdrawal symptoms.

I have been at zero for six weeks now. I have finally been successful in achieving my goal of ridding my synapses of this evil poison, but right now it seems like a pyrrhic victory. I should be celebrating the fact that I’ve survived antidepressants. The overwhelming feeling is of profound disappointment.

The belief that I would get my brain back once I reached zero is what kept me going through the bleakest days of tapering. This belief was misguided. It hasn’t happened yet. The tinnitus hasn’t improved. The anhedonia and demotivation hasn’t lifted. My expectation that I would experience joy, happiness, satisfaction, excitement and exhilaration has failed to materialise.

I suppose I should be grateful that symptoms haven’t gotten any worse, the anticipated tsunami of withdrawal has yet to materialise. I have had a few waves since reaching zero, but nothing out of the ordinary, just normal sized waves.

I’ve learnt enough about SSRIs and tapering throughout this process to realise that I may still have many more years of recovery ahead of me and that any progress may be imperceptibly slow. It takes a long time to regrow the billions of new synapses and receptors that long-term antidepressant use has destroyed.

The real healing can finally happen now that I am no longer destabilising my brain by tapering. I have reached the ultimate stability and shall be holding at this dose for the foreseeable future. I have absolutely no desire to ever take psychiatric medications again.

My focus over the last couple of years has revolved entirely around getting off the meds. That part of my life is over now and I have the gargantuan task of deciding what to do with the remaining years.

I’ll wrap up this update with a pertinent quote by Sir Winston Churchill;

“Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning.”

Thanks madeleine.

I think the enormity of the achievement will sink in once I get a few more windows going on. I've only been at baseline since coming off. You start thinking that this is as good as it gets and wonder if it was worth the struggle.

I think it's just going to take more time. This whole gig seems to be about time. The frustrating bit is not knowing how much time. We would all be able to cope with this much easier if there was a definite timescale of healing.

Hi Flowers

Hope you're good and stable after your reinstatement issues.

I have a theory that when I CT'd and stubbornly decided to tough it out, I somehow damaged my dopiminergic system. Nothing has been right since then and I probablt didn't wait long enough after reinstatement as I was far too eager to start tapering.

Like you say, it'll probably take some more time. Will just have to keep ticking the days off the calendar.

I think this site is cursed!. Last night I came back to update my status and let everybody know how I was doing. This morning I was woken at 5am with a cortisol surge. I've not had a cortisol surge for many months.

I dont know if it was just a coincidence or if it is because coming back on here stirs up horrible memories of when things were really bad and I was constantly on the forum looking for answers and support.

I can see why hardly anyone would want to come back once they've healed. I doubt I will want to come back and risk the curse of SA.

Dan,

First off, congratulations on getting off the med.  You are right -- it's just going to take more time but you will get there.

This is one of the most telling statements and one that truly resonates for me.  The unknown time frames are so difficult to deal with.  We are all different and it's so hard to deal with not knowing how your personal journey will go.

Hang in there, Dan.  You ARE a survivor.  Better days are coming.

Best,

Supplements, Magnesium, D3, Omega 3, curcumin, Valerian, 81mg Aspirin, L-Theanine, Vit. C,

Cheers Andy,

The waiting game is the hardest game to play. What makes it even harder is that we cannot recognise that change is happening whilst in the midst of it. We feel that nothing has changed, fixated by the ultimate goal, we just trudge onwards. We rarely turn around to see just how far we have come. Quite often it is much further than we ever thought possible.

I have so much respect for every person on this forum who is suffering a horror beyond all comprehension, but have decided to keep on going regardless and see their individual journey through to the end. Each and every one of them deserves a big shiny medal for their bravery.

Had a real rollercoaster of a week. It seems to fluctuate from feeling fairly good to being in the depths of despair.

The cortisol morning seemed to be a one off. However, the insomnia has returned again. I’ve started waking up really early. It feels a bit like it did when I CT’d. I really am scared by this, as I know how quickly a bout of insomnia can push you towards the edge.

Anxiety is also back. Not the crippling panic attacks of the past, but enough fear to put me permanently on edge. It doesn’t take much to set me off, usually a percussive noise such as a car door being slammed or a draught rattling a window. I seem to be extra sensitive to noise at the moment.

I keep thinking that I should be seeing a linear recovery now that I’m finally off the drugs. The thought, that this is as good as it gets, keeps recurring and has lead my mind into some very dark places. I think to myself, could I put up with living like this for 20, 30, 40 years? Nope, I couldn’t and I wouldn’t want to either. I feel trapped and can only see one way out. And then I snap out of it. Very frightening.

It’s not been all bad though. I’ve been a lot more sociable this week, getting out and meeting up with friends and family. My ability to hold a conversation is getting better too. I can actually follow what people are saying without the usual confusion and the need to ask people to repeat themselves. The cognitive fogginess has become more like a gentle mist.

Hoping this is just another wave that needs riding and is not something more sinister. Again, why do we do this to ourselves, how long must I endure the unendurable and will there be a happy ending?

sorry to hear that you're experiencing this wave, Dan998

don't worry, this will not last,  things will change and you will feel better again.

you are healing still, you are just a short while off the med completely and it takes some time for your brain to adjust. it's only been a couple of months. I have read that it's likely that the brain continues to heal long after we have any symptoms at all. You are just, unfortunately, still in the last little gasp of symptomatic healing.

you've done so well,  don't worry, you are almost there.  your brain is still tweaking things, that's all.

hang in just a wee bit longer. pull out the non drug tool kit and do those things that make you feel better and then just float- accept and float

you are going to be fine.

Thanks so much for the encouragement, Happy2Heal. It was exactly what I needed to hear.

Today is a little easier than yesterday. The anxiety has eased off, and I'm not feeling as desperate and hopeless as I was.

I am coping with this wave by telling myself that something is being healed. I've had it before, I've been in awful waves and when they've passed there has been noticeable improvement.

I have a theory that brains do not like change. Whenever there is a change they get frightened and raise an internal alarm. "Something is happening. I don't know what it is. There might be danger." The process of withdrawal and healing put the brain in a constant state of flux, and this is why anxiety is such a common complaint that all of us have.

glad to hear you are feeling a bit better.

Interesting theory about brains and changes... I think you may have something there.

for myself, even small waves alarm me because they remind me that I'm not "there" yet and I think that alarm sets off a worse wave... I don't know.

I just found some relaxation and hypnosis youtube videos that have been very helpful to me.

I have only been listening to these for 2 days now and I already notice a huge change in how I feel. Would I have felt better anyway, due to the windows/waves pattern?  who knows. But I figure listening to these videos can only help, either way.

here's a link to one of the videos, there are a bunch more by the same person, I am going to listen to the 3 hr one tonight. I then listen to the same one the next morning when I wake up around 4 or 5 am

I don't have any trouble falling asleep- I have trouble staying asleep. So the first time I listen, I fall asleep way before it's done. The second time, in the morning, I usually stay awake for all of it, but I feel way more relaxed than I normally do that early in the day. This makes me think that these are really helping me a lot.

Thanks for the link H2H. I'll give that a go. Amazing how open minded WD makes us. A few years ago I would have dismissed the idea of hypnosis, but now, I'm willing to try anything. Does this really make me open minded or just desperate for relief?

The rest of the day has been very up and down. The anxiety came back, went away again, came back and turned into a full on panic attack.

I will be so glad when this wave is over. It has been particularly cruel and nasty. I think I'm especially worried because this wave has brought back some awful memories of the sheer terror that happened during my cold turkey experience.
