☼ dan998: Cold turkey, reinstatement and tapering citalopram

A lot has happened since I last updated here. I've been staying away because it upsets me reading about the suffering that others are going through, it also makes me anxious thinking about the ordeal that I have ahead of me with regard to tapering and withdrawal. I know everyone is different, and it might not happen to me, but I really don't know if I'm strong enough to cope with years of protracted withdrawal.

I originally tried reinstating at 5mg of citalopram, I had some relief from symptoms, but felt like I needed I higher dose, so updosed to 10mg on 5th May and things started to noticeably improve within a few days.

Insomnia has decreased, I was waking every hour with numb limbs because I was unable to move whilst asleep. Also, I had the need to urinate 3 or 4 times a night.  The smallest shaft of light peeping through the curtains was enough to wake me up. These symptoms have all greatly reduced, I am now able to get to sleep without zopiclone or antihistamine. I feel that the quality of sleep has definitely improved and am now able to stay asleep for longer. The terror and dread of 'cortisol mornings' has also mostly gone away, which is such a tremendous relief.

Brain fog has also reduced. i think it may be linked to sleep, the more I get, the more clearly I am able to think. I still have difficulty with language and comprehension, but nowhere as bad as I was a few weeks ago, I am now able to hold a coherent conversation and my sense of humour is slowly starting to return, I actually found myself laughing out loud at a television programme the other day. My memory and concentration are still problematic, but am confident that this too will improve as I stabilise

Appetite is returning. I've started enjoying food again and had some serious cravings for junk food. This is probably a good thing as the brain needs food to function properly and I was barely able to eat anything during CT. Will have to be careful not to over do it though, as I hate being fat.

Anhedonia continues to persist. I still find myself grieving for the life I used to have; I ran a successful business, owned my own home, had an active social life, had relationships, lots of hobbies and interests and got excited about the future. SSRI's have stolen my life, I want it back, but can't find the motivation to do anything about it. I just about manage to do the day-to-day stuff. I can't imagine how some of you are able to work full-time whilst going through this.

I went to the doctors about my respiratory problems. She seemed genuinely concerned and immediately booked me in for a load of tests; chest x-ray, bloods, ECG, spirometry. I'll find out the results on the 28th May. Hopefully, it's just anxiety related, although I'm a bit worried that I could have COPD as I was a heavy smoker for 20 years. I suppose some health anxiety should be expected considering how much my CNS has been upset by CT and RI.

It appears that the sinus headaches may have nothing to do with withdrawal and I have been given corticosteroids for allergic rhinitus, which is working for the eye/ face/ tooth pain. Still getting headaches though, but the steroids take a while to work properly.

I've subjected my body and mind to so much self inflicted trauma over the past few months. Despite this I am fairly confident that I will be able to fully stabilise within another month or two. I'm going to take things easy for now, get some rest and learn as much as I can, before cracking on with the tapering.

I suppose I should be grateful that I've managed to half my dosage. I wouldn't recommend the way I did it. Cold turkey is harsh and reinstatement is risky. I feel that I have been very lucky.

I want be able to get more involved with this forum, everyone here seems to be so caring and supportive, whilst going through so much pain and suffering. I would like to be able give something back.

Hey Dan

It seems that your RI is working and you are slowly, but surely stabilizing. I'm happy for you. When you get as stable as possible on that dosage you can make a plan how to start tapering slowly and carefully, starting from a place of stability. If reading about others' experiences is upsetting for you, you can only read and write in your thread for now. I wish you much luck with everything.

I suffer from depression, anxiety, pure-o ocd, and panic attacks since 2004. Been on multiple different psychiatric drugs since 2006. Never had a significant WD problem before, only brain zaps for a month and then I'd be fine...............Been on Cipralex (escitalopram) 15 mg and Fluanxol (flupentixol) 1 mg since Sep 2014. Stopped taking the Cipralex after a fast 20-day taper.Took the last 5 mg Cipralex on Feb 5th, 2015. Then took Seroxat (paroxetine) 10 mg for a week, and stopped it too. Severe WD started suddenly on Feb 16th. RI 5 mg Cipralex on Feb 18th, 2015. RI worked and was relatively stable for a while................April 7 - decreased Fluanxol from 1 mg to 0.5 mg and took it at this dose for a week. - BIG MISTAKE; April 13 - WD starts creeping in; April 14 - RI full dose of Fluanxol 1 mg => severe muscle twitching and jerking when trying to relax and fall asleep, overwhelming sense of doom, dread, terror, and horror, insomnia, hoping to stabilize.
Tried doing a 10% cut off Fluanxol in the end of May for a few days, but quickly updosed to full dose because the twitching returned.
Experiencing waves and windows in the following months.
Unsuccessful brief taper attempt of Fluanxol by 5% on November 1st. Symptoms hit the next day. Too scared to continue tapering, reinstate full dose.
Severe crash in November after stupidly trying a barbiturate on November 9th. Grave mistake. Sense of unshakable inescapable internal torture, like my soul is in hell being tortured, terror/horror/dread/doom (probably akathisia?) that gets especially bad when trying to relax and fall asleep, muscles twitch, jerk and move on their own, shaking, insomnia, can't eat, confusion, disorientation, brain not working normally. Never felt so bad in my entire life. Never experiment with other meds while in WD! Praying to God I stabilize and get back to my baseline.
December - things getting even worse.

January - unbearable suffering

Hello Dan

What great news! You are starting to stablelize and that's fantastic! Your laughing at the TV programme reminded me that I realised I was on the mend when I laughed at a friends joke! Only a small thing but it meant the world to me. Once I started getting some quality sleep I felt things got better too.

It's good that you are getting your other health problems checked out. Sometimes it is difficult to know what is or isn't withdrawal related. Knowing that you have been checked out and are OK takes some of the anxiety away I think.

It would be great to hear how you are doing even if you can't read the other threads right now.

I really wish you well and hope the upward trend continues.

They say that laughter is the best medicine. I used to laugh so much before the ADs. I would find comedy in everything. I had a really crude sense of humour. My laughter would come from the depths of my stomach, proper belly laughs. I would laugh so hard that my sides would hurt. I'm looking forward to the day when I am free from 'medicine' and these feelings will once again return.

One of the reasons I wanted off Cit was anhedonia, what was the point of doing anything without pleasure reward? Today feels like a huge step backwards. I have been feeling really lazy. I spent a few hours watching the bird table. I read for a bit, which I suppose is progress, as brain fog previously prevented me from doing this. I've just woken up from a nap and I really don't feel like doing anything constructive, will probably just watch some tv.

I can remember during early ct that I had bags of energy and wanted to do so much, perhaps too much, but it felt good to be moving forward. I'm not saying that I want the hyper-mania back, but a bit of balance between the two states would be nice.

At least I'm sleeping well, got a full 8 hours of decent quality sleep last night  :) I feel that my poisoned brain is slowly readjusting and it wont be long until I'm stable and ready to taper.

Hi Dan

Try not to  take today as a huge step backwards - it is just a different kind of day.

My days range from being quite energetic and others where I can't even be bothered to get out of bed. It is just the nature of WD. The main thing is we can see improvements like you reading your book today. No matter how small these improvements are it shows  we are on the road to recovery.

Struggling to get motivated again. I need to shake things up a bit, try something new to snap me out of this fog. I might go for a drive. I find it very therapeutic, having to concentrate on driving takes my mind off things and makes me feel far less anxious.

Went for a walk in the park, sat and watched the birds on the lake, was quite relaxing. It seemed I was only there for a short while, was there for hours. I almost enjoyed myself, but I could still feel the 'chemically induced anxiety' lurking in the back of my mind.

Just saying hello :) and your doing great!

2000 - sertraline for job anxiety low confidence (17 years old) ..which turned the next 16 years into nightmare!

On/off sertraline severe withdrawals every time. 2014 - felt better as reduced dose of sertraline no more inner restlessness. Doctor rushed off again. Hit severe withdrawal. Lost the little I had in life. Couldn't get stable again on 12.5mg. Was switched to prozac. Had severe reaction to prozac..came off in November 2015 at 6mg as felt more confused and damaged on it..Even more withdrawal ..rage, depression, dyphoria, near constant suicidal ideation, self harm impulses, doom, concrete block in head, unable to do much of anything with this feeling in head..went back on 6mg of sertraline to see if would alleviate anything. It didn't..reduced from December to June 2016 came off at 2.5mg sertraline as was hospitalised for the severe rage, suicidal impulses, and put on 50mg lofepramine which in 2nd week reduced all symptoms but gave insomnia which still have..psych stopped lofepramine cold turkey..no increased withdrawal symptoms new symptoms from lofepramine except persistant insomnia which has as side effect.

Taking Ativan for 8 months for the severe rage self harm impulses 1-3 times a week (mostly 2 times a week) at .5mg. Two months (I'm unsure exactly when the interdose started to happen) ago interdose withdrawal seemed to happen..2 days I think after the Ativan.

Nightmare that could have been avoided!

The anxiety is still there today, not the crippling dread and terror that was CT, but there nonetheless, A knot in my stomach and numb legs, a fearful feeling that just wont go away. I've always suffered with anxiety, mostly of the social variety, but this feels different, it has a chemical feel to it. I guess I haven't fully stabilised yet and just need to be patient, but I'm not getting any younger and want to get on with life. f****** antidepressants.

Headache and insomnia has returned after a week of decent sleep. I'm not sure if the two things are linked or if one causes the other? With luck it will be just a blip and things will settle down quickly. The other symptoms are almost manageable, but lack of sleep completely wipes me out. It will be a struggle to get anything done today :(

Hi Dan

I think it will take some time for you to stabilize. I did a CT (too fast taper) of Cipralex in February and then a 50% cut of the other med I'm on Flupentixol in April and still haven't stabilized. I'm worried about losing life too, but I want to do this as safely as possible. If we rush like I did, we end up feeling more miserable and losing much more time. Impatience is our enemy in this game. Slow and stable is much better than fast and miserable and barely surviving.

You're right Blue, I've halved my dose in a few months. If I had done a slow taper I would still be on 15mg and would have reached 10mg in September. It makes sense for me to wait a couple of months and carry on from there. I'm looking at about 2 years of tapering.

Slowly, slowly wins the race.

It doesn't really matter how long it takes. All that matters is how we feel. If feel relatively fine and symptoms are tolerable, then what difference does it make whether we're still tapering or off the drugs? Stability is the most important thing. I'd rather taper for 10 years than endure the way I felt during my crashes. Best of luck to you. I think I might wait till next year to start tapering. I'm horrified by what happened to me and don't want to go back to that place. I will avoid it at all costs even though I feel like throwing all of my pills down the toilet and flushing it right now.

I had a day that made me feel almost human. I went for a day out to a historic castle and gardens with my family. Wasn't anything special, normal stuff that normal people do every day. I immersed myself into the experience. Enjoyed the sights, sounds and smells. It was wonderful to feel some connection to the real world again.

I had no anxiety, breathlessness or headaches. I think doing something that broke up the daily routine was really beneficial and enabled me to forget about my symptoms for a few hours.  A glimpse of what recovery might feel like?

Today isn't so great. As usual I cant get motivated and I'm feeling anxious again. I guess this is windows and waves?

I am so glad you were able to enjoy a fab day out with your family and you had a break from your symptoms.

I am not sure about window and waves - I have just found that every day is different in WD. Sorry you have the anxiety back today but tomorrow is another day and you may feel better.

I hope so.

Hello to all on this thread. I'm in the same boat as you. You can see by my signature that I've been having a rough go. I just switched back tp Paxil, but this time it's liquid and starting at 5 mg.

Dan, i read you upped to 10 mg. How are you feeling. T sound like you're making some progress. I hope so. Eventually, you'll stabilize and then you can start titrating. The hard part right now is trying to figure out where to stabilize, right? This is the problem I'm in right now. I'm trying to figure out how long i stay on the 5 mg before i decide to increase.

Let me know how you are faring. We will do just fine...all of us in this can encourage each other to keep going forward. Eventually, we hit the finish line and take the prize!

ADs for approx 20 yrs.

APRIL 21, 2015: switched from Paxil cr 25mg (equiv to 20. mg regular paxil) to liquid Prozac 20 mg. Took prozac for 5 weeks. Didn't work.

MAY 21. 2015: switched back to Paxil - liquid 5mg for 1 week. Then upped to 7.5. Waiting to stabilize at this.

Tapered off prozac in 2 weeks.

Hi Ladybug,

The decision to updose is a difficult one. If i had stayed at the lower dose for a few more days or weeks, then withdrawal symptoms might have improved anyway, and tapering would have been so much shorter.

I stayed at the lower dose for 2 weeks after reinstating. The reinstatement thread mentions something about the dangers of going back on too high a dose because of paradoxical reactions due to upregulation of neurotransmitters. I'm not entirely sure what this means, but thought it was better to play it safe and not go straight back to full dose, even though I had successfully done this in the past.

I hoped that 5mg would have been enough to stop the horror of withdrawal. It did take the edge off and provided some relief, but I just felt that I needed slightly more. I suppose it's about balancing the side effects of the drugs against the pain of withdrawal. The fear and terror of cortisol mornings, constant panic attacks, insomnia, breathlessness, DP/ DR, memory problems and mental confusion were all too much to bear. I came to the conclusion that being able to function as a human being was more important than rushing to be free of the drugs.

My symptoms have noticeably improved since updosing 3 weeks ago. I'm certainly not stable, the insomnia and anxiety are still there, but life is tolerable and I have no intention of going up any higher in dosage.

Whether to stick or twist? Everyone is different, what worked for me might not work for others.

A yay from me too :)

Hi Dan. I'm so glad you're starting to stabilize. What a crazy ride this is! I think you are right in updosing. I believe you're at 15mg? I'm probably going to be right there with you. Alto suggested i wait 4 days on 5mg paxil and 7.5mg prozac (I'm trying to titrate off prozac in 2 weeks) to see where I'm at. I'm finding one day i can handle the symptoms, only to be crushed with severity the next day. Today was brutal!

I need to stop reading some of the horror stories...It's scaring the crap out of me! I need to keep thinking that if i go super duper slow, it won't be so painful. At this point, i don't care if it takes me 4 or 5 years ! I just don't want it to be excruciating.

So glad you're on the up and up! I'll be following right behind you!

Hey Ladybug,

Sorry to hear you had a brutal day. It seems to go like that for me too. I think I try to do too much when I'm having a good day, overstimulate myself, and then feel like crap the following day.

I'm glad you decided to follow Alto's advice, she is very wise and has helped many people through the WD nightmare.

The horror stories scare me as well. I try to remind myself that everyone's experience is different. We might get off lightly, or we might not. There is no way of telling and trying to predict the future will only cause more anxiety.

A very slow taper should give our brains a chance to repair without too many symptoms. We will get through this and become stronger people for the experience. Spending the rest of our lives on these poisons is NOT an option.

I tried a bit of light exercise yesterday, I'm really paying for it today. Completely wiped me out, totally exhausted and aching all over. I only did a few sit ups and press ups! Despite this setback, I'm going to persevere as I feel that getting myself physically fit will make the onslaught of tapering easier.

Still haven't stabilised yet. This whole process is so frustrating. I want to be off of citalopram. I can feel it gripping hold of me again, stealing my emotions and motivation. Not nice.

Thanks for the link MammaP. It looks like I'll have to take things easy and slowly build up my fitness levels.

I can feel changes happening within my brain. Last night I slept for 7 hours. I have only been getting 4 or 5 hours for the last few months. For me, insomnia has been the most crippling of symptoms, its such a relief to have had a decent sleep. I've also started having lucid dreams again. Most people are disturbed by vivid dreams, not me, I've had them from childhood, they are perfectly normal and I welcome their return.

Language skills continue to improve. Still suffering from a bit of brain fog, but I find myself more able to keep up with and contribute to conversations. I am also seeing the funny side of things and laughing a lot more. I'm now better able to comprehend written text, almost finished reading Anatomy of an Epidemic, this is a vast improvement, as two months ago I had the reading ability of a 7 year old.

My nerves feel less raw. I can now tolerate bright light and my vision has changed, the 'blue filter' has gone away and I can perceive the warmer colours. During CT it sometimes seemed that there were no colours and everything was a shade of grey.

It's not all good news though. The headaches have returned, a sharp pain that moves around. I tell myself that it's neurons growing back, but I might be wrong about that.

Demotivation continues to be an issue. Getting seriously bored with doing nothing all day, other than watching tv. I have lots of ideas about things I want to do, but just cant manage to take that first step.

My brain has been playing tricks with me. I keep getting glimpses of past memories, things I used to like doing, places I liked going, people I enjoyed spending time with. It's like the old me is fighting to escape from deep within, trying to remind me of real emotions. But, it's all just out of reach and when I try to focus on these images and feelings, they disappear. it's like when a word is on the tip of your tongue. It's hard to explain, the real me is imprisoned within my own brain, but my brain is me, so how can I be trapped within it?
