Just got home from the pain specialist. He said he can't really help because he has no idea what's wrong.

I'm trying to follow the way of Alan gordon in his book and also a bit of hypnotherapy.

It sounds like you're not being offered the help you should! Does the specialist you saw only write prescriptions?

This  https://www.nbt.nhs.uk/our-services/a-z-services/pain-clinic describes what one NHS pain clinic offers.

"The Pain Clinic at Southmead Hospital is a nationally recognised centre of excellence for pain management. We focus on reducing suffering experienced by a person with chronic pain by developing physical, emotional, intellectual, and social skills to help an individual regain control of his/her life and enhance the quality and pleasure of that life, despite the pain.

Pain can affect just about every aspect of people's lives.

Pain can affect just about every aspect of people's lives. It can affect:

  • the way people move
  • how much they do
  • how far they go
  • how able they are to take part in activities
  • how confident and optimistic they feel.
  • relationships with others
  • how well they sleep or concentrate
  • how much they enjoy life.

As time goes on the effects of pain become more complicated.

Pain management aims to explain and reduce these effects by giving people information and helping them develop coping skills that improve their ability to manage pain. Pain management is not trying to cure pain, although some people say their pain has reduced afterwards."

I imagine and hope they see people on an ongoing basis because it really helps to get ongoing support with such a thorny issue.

Maybe the key is to ask for a referral for pain management.

I'm glad you're trying the book and some hypnotherapy. Let us know how it goes.

There’s not a specific topic on alpha lipoic acid. Not sure you’ll find much support or advice for it here, as SA focuses on getting off psychiatric medications and utilizing non-drug coping techniques. Supplements can often have adverse effects on those of us with a sensitive CNS.

I tried sending you a message but the system says that you can't receive them. I found a commercial site which provided a really good explanation for symptoms like ours. It is about nutritional deficiencies induced by psychiatric medications. I was fascinated by vitamin B6 since deficiency results in many of the symptoms which we experience and it has been used to reduce neuropathic pain.

Prior medications;

sertraline 50mg April

sertraline 100mg May to July 2014 (ceased medication immediately upon occurrence of first thunderclap headache)

lorazepam April 2014 and November 2014 to January 2015 (each time suppressing symptoms of illness until two weeks after cessation of medication)

seroquel November 2014 to January 2015 50mg prior to being raised to 100mg for one day (medication ceased immediately upon occurrence of convulsive seizure)

warfarin 1990 to June 2023

Was instructed to 'cease doing anything healthy' by treating psychiatrist in June 2014 (the psychiatrist stating that belief in disease is the cause of disease and that dietary supplementation encourages people to think there's something wrong with us) so only commenced taking supplements again in June 2023 upon contrary instructions from GP.

Current medications;

eliquis since June 2023

Supplements; multivitamin/mineral, zinc, magnesium, calcium/magnesium, vitamin c, vitamin d, spirulina, resveratrol, iron.

It's very confusing knowing what to do for the beat.

I've seen a lot of people who have success stories, alto included took micro doses of things to over come withdrawal. I just don't understand how you are supposed to know what's safe and what isn't and what to do for the best with anything.

This whole process is very hard.

Mine was never diagnosed, because the treating psychiatrist decided to cover up after screwing up with multiple patients (including one that he was found responsible for the death of, leading to his sacking) so I have been having to do all of my own research to uncover and prove everything and fight for my rights. The local hospital network has already acknowledged that cases like mine weren't always recognised so now I just have to provide the government with enough evidence to prove what happened. So yes, I am still suffering from PAWS/BIND though its not anywhere near as bad as it used to be.

Probably not but they often recognise the symptoms of benzodiazepine withdrawal. Early on both of my legs were wobbling all over the place trying to stand, so I had to hold them with my hands. Beyond that, for the first few years, there were headaches, leg cramps (particularly after effort), abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, racing pulse, hypersensitivity, blurred/double vision, derealization, memory loss, the list is so long that it's probably easier to tell you to look up the Colorado consortium's BIND: the patient experience. It has a fairly complete list of likely symptoms. Add to that the onset of severe muscle damage and autoimmune myopathy as well as lactic alkalosis induced respiratory failure and you've got the picture.

As for the question about whether full recovery is possible I can't say. Antibiotics and having my gall bladder removed, because of gallstones, greatly helped me and people at my local autoimmune myopathy support group have commented on my improvement thanks to improving my diet and supplementation so there's definitely a lot which can be done. I just don't know if it can be completely reversed in every case.

So tomorrow is my 35th birthday and my 23 month anniversary of being AD free. This time last year I said to my husband, on my next birthday I will be doing so much better. Boy was I wrong. So I thought I would look back over these last 2 years and list what's got better, what's got worse and what's completely new. Then maybe others can see something I can't see.

Things that have improved

. When I came here I could not cry. I felt upset 24/7 on the verge of tears but nothing would come out. I would feel upset but nothing. I honestly felt like I was going to explode. I can now cry. It doesn't always feel quite right but I can now. Which is actually wonderful. I remember when I joined here @Ariel said to me crying could be something to look forward to. Haha. Well it's happened. I've been able to cry for about a year now. I get waves of periods where I feel like crying for no reason and sometimes nothing happens but all on all I would say that's got better. Therapist used to say to me I couldn't cry because of trauma. That's nonsense. The medications had literally glued shut my tear ducts.

. Weird feeling in my throat. This is something I've always had trouble explaining. It's like am Agitation and a menthol feeling stuck in my throat. This has appeared and disappeared throughout my withdrawal but has been one of my most stubborn and awful symptoms. I haven't had it in about 3 months. No doubt it will come back again but I can pray I've seen the back of it.

. Anxiety for absoloutly no reason what's so ever. I couldn't cook dinner, wash up, play a game or make simple decisions. Anything would riddle me with anxiety. It like being terrified but no idea why. I still have some anxiety but that's because of all my other symptoms. There's a reason to it. Take away my other symptoms and I think this would be less of an issue.

. Insomnia. I dint want to jinx it. Without my sleep I couldn't cope.

. Brain zaps and rage. They disappeared after acute. Within thr first 3 months.

. Another one hard to describe but it felt like I had screaming in my head.

. Pains in stomach and ribs. Shooting stabbing. These would cycle round with the throat problem. Tension in the shoulder blades. Hoping this has gone forever. I used to get tension in my shoulder blades on the drugs. Maybe it was the drug that caused it.

. Non stop diarreha. This has only just started to right itself.

. Urine urgency. If I was outside and then came indoors or moved room eith change of tempreture I would suddenly need to urinate and I could not hold it. This I hope has gone. Haven't had it for about 6 months.

. My legs woukd kick out in bed for no reason what so ever. This stopped after acute.

Things that continue

. At 17 months off I had a short lived bout of bladder discomfort. Felt like a UTI without the infection. It soon disappeared. This is now back. This scares me. Its very uncomfortable and makes me scared to move.

. At 18 months off back pain started. Lower back pain. Like my back was being crushed. This has not resolved although no test can tell me why.

. At 20 months off the nerve pain started. I had a weird nerve feeling in my foot ever since I CT the drugs. However it never really bothered me. Now it's muscle and nerve pain in my buttocks and into my foot. As soon as I sit down the burning pain starts and then circulation gets cut off. Once again no one can tell me why this is.

. Fast heart rate, low blood pressure. I have elevated heart rate most the time. No idea why but when I stand up it jumps up even higher. Almost always in the 100s. Heart tests have been done. All OK.

. Tinnitus has been with me from day dot. When I napped it would zap me awake. It was horrible. I would have toxic naps where the tinnitus would be ringing but it also felt like people were touching my head. I believe that has stopped. But the tinnitus is always there. It was getting quiter and then I took vitamin D and it got so much louder again.

To be honest a lot of things got worse once I took the vitamin D. I wish I had not taken it.

So if anyone has any comments on whst they make of all this feel free to share.

It's rare for everyone's symptoms to be exactly the same but you probably saw that many of your symptoms were on the list of BIND symptoms. I had long had tinnitus, after working in loud factories and such, but it became deafening after withdrawal started and only declined in volume to the prior level a few years ago. I also found that the withdrawal created an intense urge to kill people. As the BIND list of symptoms details this is a perfectly normal response in withdrawal. The withdrawal induced immunoinsufficiency which led to onset of a leg infection. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8329586/ For five years I experienced tingling of my skin which felt as though an electric current was continuously flowing through me. I would sleep for a couple of hours, wake for a couple and so on. Luckily that gradually improved after I received antibiotics for the leg infection. A lot of the time I thought that insects were crawling on my legs and I sometimes hallucinated seeing large spiders near me. The back pain seems routine in BIND and I can't stand for more than fifteen minutes at a time without sitting to recover. As for the heart rate, testing didn't show any difference in it but I had so many tests because it felt as though my heart was racing.

Prior medications;

sertraline 50mg April

sertraline 100mg May to July 2014 (ceased medication immediately upon occurrence of first thunderclap headache)

lorazepam April 2014 and November 2014 to January 2015 (each time suppressing symptoms of illness until two weeks after cessation of medication)

seroquel November 2014 to January 2015 50mg prior to being raised to 100mg for one day (medication ceased immediately upon occurrence of convulsive seizure)

warfarin 1990 to June 2023

Was instructed to 'cease doing anything healthy' by treating psychiatrist in June 2014 (the psychiatrist stating that belief in disease is the cause of disease and that dietary supplementation encourages people to think there's something wrong with us) so only commenced taking supplements again in June 2023 upon contrary instructions from GP.

Current medications;

eliquis since June 2023

Supplements; multivitamin/mineral, zinc, magnesium, calcium/magnesium, vitamin c, vitamin d, spirulina, resveratrol, iron.

I've seen a lot of people who have success stories, alto included took micro doses of things to over come withdrawal. I just don't understand how you are supposed to know what's safe and what isn't and what to do for the best with anything.

This whole process is very hard.

it is indeed very hard

and yet you're doing it! day by day, putting one foot in front of the other and making it thru to the next day

You need to give yourself a lot of credit for that

yes Alto tried different things, and shared what happened with those things. She didn't know if they'd be safe either.

I can't speak for her but my guess is since there was so little help available anywhere, and she was spending a fortune on some of the finest drs she could find and they  were pretty clueless

that she had no other choice than to find her way and try different things

No one can tell you what will happen to you if you decide to do the same

it's totally up to you, it is your body

no one else knows you more or better than you do

if you find something you think might help and want to try it and are willing to accept the consequences, no one can stop you

~~~~~~~~~
regarding your question about ALA-
here is something I found on the web
"Of the three main types of omega-3 fatty acids, plant foods typically contain only alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). ALA is not as active in the body and must be converted to two other forms of omega-3 fatty acids — eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) — to bestow the same health benefits ( 4 )."
I was vegan for some time, and I still do not eat hardly any animal products and did not want to take fish oil as is suggested on this site
so I take a vegan omega 3 supplement made from algae
which is exactly where the FISH get their omega 3s from- algae
there is a great debate about if taking Omega 3 fatty acids is even necessary, the main issue is that most people consume too much omega 6 and since they use the compete for the same pathway for "processing" inside your body, your may be missing out on the more healthful omega 3
I had never heard of an ALA supplement before, it's made in your body when you consume things with DHA and EPA
but in any case I don't know how much that could hurt OR help
you have to make up your own mind about that, but if you do decide to try it, start very low and go very slow~
 have you ever had your vit d level tested?
that's too bad
what does vit D did you try?
did you take it in the morning or later in the day? (it's best taken in the morning)
is your calcium level ok? vit D is needed for the proper metabolism of calcium.
were you given vit D2 or vit D3 to take, or did they just tell you which one to buy?
do you drink fortified milks or eat vit D fortified foods?
low vit D is associated with depression and a whole host of other issues.
You can get all you need if you spend enough time in the sun but it needs to be mid day sun, and it needs to be just long enough to get your skin to turn pink (not red)
can you take a lunch break outside?
I had a low levels of vit D and calcium, both in the "normal" range but at the very bottom of both and I got awfully sick with osteomalacia and something called secondary hyperPARAthyroidism.
It took nearly a whole year of vit D and calcium supplements to bring the parathyroid hormone level back to normal (it was way above normal) and to bring the vit D and calcium up where they were supposed to be
turns out even going out in the sun wasn't enough for me. as we age we don't make vit D as efficiently from our skin, and living in the northeast, it's impossible to get enough vit D from the sun anyway.... so I have to supplement
Usually if it's something your body needs, it won't cause any problems taking it.
But you'd still want to try lower doses.
It's so daft my doctor wanted me to take 50000iu a week but I said I wanted to do a test run. I got myself a child's D3 liquid. Only 400iu. After 2 days I felt weird after 4 days i could barely function.
I've had my PSH tested to check my parathyroid and it was all good apparently.
It's all very strange.
I don't understand it but my body does not want it.
can you lay down on your stomach and not have the pain in your buttocks?
you mentioned it hurts to sit, stand and to lay on your back, but what about laying on your belly?
do you have to be on your feet all day at your job or can you sit? is sitting any easier during the day vs nighttime? or the same all the time?
do you have any numbness or pins and needles senastations?
were you checked for endometriosis?
did any of these drs tell you that you might have a pinched nerve?
~~~~~~~~~~~
I've only had unexplainable pain once in my life, and that was when I stopped taking seroquel, except that the pain didn't happen immediately so I didn't see any connection...

I honestly can't recall how delayed that reaction was... I know I did keep trying to take the seroquel to deal with the severe insomnia and panic from stopping lexapro CT.

This was many years ago so it's hard to remember the details

Now I am almost 100% positive that it was from taking high doses of seroquel and stopping it cold turkey.

it was a burning pain in my feet, only happened at night, thank god! I would sit and hold my feet and rock back and forth and cry and cry

The dr tried all kinds of pain meds and anti seizure drugs that are often given for nerve pain but nothing worked.

It did go away, I don't remember how long it lasted, but it did eventually stop

I know that's small comfort when you are going thru it now

No I've not been tested for endometriosis.

Yes sometimes it feels like when you have sat down for far to long and you need to move. That numb and achey feeling but x100.

No part of the day is better. Its 24/7.

I cant believe I was dealing with everything better in the first year and a half then I have from 18 months onwards. I'm trying to tell myself this is the last horrah and once these symptoms sort themselves out I will be done but I honestly don't believe this is going to go away. Everything else I've managed to distract from but I'm failing to do it this time. It's hard to distract from something when you can never get comfortable or out of pain.

Thank you for talking to me. I know you cant fix it for me but you sre very kind to lend an ear.

aww Sooty is adorable!
I've been missing rats so much, thank you for sharing that photo and the one before too

right now I am trying to make some hammocks for a friend's rats- she is going to come from out of state to help me on the day I get my surgery, so I want to do something for her

she's fostering 5 rats and has I think 4  of her own too.

I am a little jealous that she can have rats and I can't but well, I don't have the time for rats right now anyway!

I get really down and think I'll never be able to have them again, because it looks so impossible for me to be able to move to a place where they are allowed

I cant' have them here but I can't afford to live any where else, and there are so few apts in my price range (I am VERY low income)

but then I started to think, why be sad about something when you don't know what the future holds?
I never in my wildest dreams thought I would be able to live in such a nice place as the one I have now- but it happened!

so maybe something even better will come along and I will be able to have my beloved pets again

I just don't know.

do you like any music bands?

random I know but I keep trying to find someone who likes the group BTS like I do, I joined fan groups of course but I want to find a fan "in the wild" as we call it, someone who you just come across who happens to like the same group

I think I'll ask in my thread about it, there's so many members here, there might be a BTS fan or two

their music gives me a lot of hope and happiness.

I never felt this way about any other group

They have a message about loving yourself, they are all about positivity and stuff like that. Social justice, etc. They have members with mental health struggles that have been open about them, trying to help others see it's nothing to feel ashamed about.

ANYWAY! back to the pets!
let me see if I can find a good photo of some of my ratties

this is one of my girls from a few years ago, I made that hammock she's in. I make and sell them... it made it possible to afford rat care and vet fees

I can't prove this but I have been backtracking the likely issues which adverse reactions to psychiatric medications can cause, in order to try to help in reversing the effects which the meds had on me, and I now have a strong theory. Psychiatric meds like SSRI and benzodiazepines have actions variously through the hypothalamus, pituitary, and adrenal glands and I think that this is the key to our withdrawal symptoms. Oxytocin is produced in the hypothamus but is stored and released from the pituitary gland. https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/body/21459-pituitary-gland

The disruption of normal hypothalamus and pituitary gland function causes disruption of release of a number of substances but I think that the most crucial to focus on is oxytocin because of the wide range of benefits which it has on our bodies. Relieving pain and neuropathic pain. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4276444/  https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6056657/ Regulating blood pressure to prevent symptoms like dizziness. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7477297/ Regulating self awareness, so likely leading to derealization when deficiency occurs. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6784812/

So an oxytocin deficiency, resulting from disruption of hypothalamus production and pituitary release, not only affects adrenal function but also a range of other factors throughout our bodies. There is a wealth of information on increasing oxytocin levels on the internet, though the more comprehensive are commercial sites so I can only provide one's like these. https://www.health.harvard.edu/mind-and-mood/oxytocin-the-love-hormone https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6826447/ https://wemovetoheal.org/article/methods-to-increase-oxytocin-levels/

Prior medications;

sertraline 50mg April

sertraline 100mg May to July 2014 (ceased medication immediately upon occurrence of first thunderclap headache)

lorazepam April 2014 and November 2014 to January 2015 (each time suppressing symptoms of illness until two weeks after cessation of medication)

seroquel November 2014 to January 2015 50mg prior to being raised to 100mg for one day (medication ceased immediately upon occurrence of convulsive seizure)

warfarin 1990 to June 2023

Was instructed to 'cease doing anything healthy' by treating psychiatrist in June 2014 (the psychiatrist stating that belief in disease is the cause of disease and that dietary supplementation encourages people to think there's something wrong with us) so only commenced taking supplements again in June 2023 upon contrary instructions from GP.

oh I am so sorry I put that idea out there?

I was getting frustrated for you and tried to look up all possible reasons for the pain you describe

if you had endometriosis I'm pretty sure you'd have other symptoms, the few ppl I know with it have very painful periods that led them to see a gyn doc where they were eventually diagnosed

I don't know that we have more tings that can go wrong but I do know that most research has been done on MEN as if women were the same

and more attention has been paid to MEN historically,

so we are stil behind in getting the best health care, that's for sure

it's changing, they are doing more to try to advance women's health care but historically it's not been great

I want to be a rat!!

they seem to know how to enjoy every minute. I love when they popcorn or boggle

or a MOUSE! busy little critters that they are

They are so adorable. What cuties.

Several people had mentioned endometriosis to me. So it was already in the back of my mind so don't worry. I do have painful heavy periods. They never used to be this bad. I dunno. Maybe off to the gyno next for me

never heard of it but looked it up and wow that seems to fit several of your symptoms!!!

https://www.webmd.com/pain-management/pudendal-neuralgia

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK544272/

and it's not easy to diagnosis and is sufficiently uncommon that many drs miss it or misdiagnose it

!!

I think it's worth exploring. esp If you have an understanding doctor who is not one of those who is going to ridicule you for searching google or for making suggestions (the kind of dr who asks you where you got your medical degree is the kind of dr you DON'T want to discuss this with!!)

gosh I kind of hope it's not that, it sounds like it can be challenging to treat but it would be great to finally have an answer- and it looks like treatment can be successful if you're properly diagnosed

:)

the fact that laying on your stomach is the only comfortable position really makes it sound more physically related and not WD recovery related.

tbh due to the intensity and the way you describe this issue, I have a hard time believing it's WD related

but that's personal opinion only so don't put much stock in that LOL
